GRASSROOTS LOBBY DAYS
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, March 8-10, 2009

Come to Carson City and add your voice to others as an advocate for women and families at the 2009 legislature.  Individuals and organizations will unite at Grassroots Lobby Days, March 8-10 for training, inspiration, and promoting their concerns with legislators.  Since 1991, Lobby Days has been organized by the Nevada Women’s Lobby to provide a forum for hundreds of grassroots lobbyists from throughout Nevada to gather and demonstrate their widespread support.

Make your plans now to attend.  We hope you will want to be there for all three days, but know that busy schedules can make that impossible.  The schedule is flexible and we keep the costs low.  The registration fee is only $35 and covers materials and programs for all three days.  In addition, you register and pay only for the meals you want to attend: Sunday lunch and dinner, Monday breakfast and lunch, and Tuesday lunch are scheduled.  Scholarships are available; please call Byllie Andrews at 775-327-4856 for scholarship information.

Grassroots Lobby training begins early Sunday morning at Gold Dust West with a plenary session and workshops designed to move us forward, united in our efforts to improve the status of women, children, and families in Nevada.  Lunch will afford us the time to network with other grassroots lobbyers. The afternoon continues with presentations on hot issues for 2009, plus a panel of women legislators who will give us their candid impression of what to expect from the legislature this year. An informal evening of cocktails and dinner will end the day as we enjoy time with old friends and new ones too.

Monday gives us first-hand experience at the legislature, with opportunities to observe and/or testify at legislative hearings.  You will be provided with a schedule of committees and copies of the bills to be heard, and there will be small group orientations and a chance to get your questions answered about the process of legislative lobbying.

Most legislators make time to meet with constituents during the afternoon, an excellent time to talk to them about your legislative issues.  Legislators will be invited to join us for a reception at the Carson Nugget on Monday afternoon, with a program focus on one of our major issues presented by a national speaker.

Tuesday continues at the legislature with different committee hearings and provides additional opportunities for you to lobby legislators.  For further information about Grassroots Lobby Days, contact Byllie Andrews at 775-327-4856 or Byllie@charter.net.

Please help us spread the word about Grassroots Lobby Days in your newsletter.  Feel free to use any or all of the above information.  Thank You!

AAUW Action Network Needs Our Support With Pay Equity Legislation

posted ‎‎Feb 5, 2009 6:30 PM‎‎ by Claudia Lindsay   [ updated ‎‎Feb 5, 2009 6:32 PM‎‎ ]

Sen. Reid's Leadership will be a Key Factor in the success or failure of pay  equity legislation. This is extremely urgent as he's now leaning toward pushing only the Ledbetter bill through the Senate as soon as Friday. Please take a minute to call this  toll free number and  ask to speak to Senator  Harry Reid's office in Washington, DC  -  1 866 338 1015. Tell them that you want his support for this legislation.

Take Action

Thanks to the support of AAUW Action Network members, the House passed the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act last Friday.  The Senate is expected to take up these bills soon, giving Congress a chance to make a real difference on pay equity.  While Sen. Harry Reid is a co-sponsor of both the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act, he needs to exercise his considerable leadership and influence as the Senate Majority Leader if the Paycheck Fairness Act is to survive in the Senate.  Call Sen. Reid now and let him know that passing both of these important bills together is crucial.  Even if you have written him about this legislation before, Sen. Reid needs to hear from you now!

AAUW urges the passage of both the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act; we also urge their passage as part of the first set of bills the new president signs into law.  Passing both bills, in tandem, is critical to the overall goal of achieving pay equity for women: the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act rights the wrongs done by the Supreme Court, regaining ground we've lost and ensuring that people who've been discriminated against can seek vindication.  The Paycheck Fairness Act is a comprehensive bill that would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law as well as strengthen penalties for violations, strengthen federal outreach, education and enforcement efforts, and prohibit retaliation against workers who ask about employers' wage practices.  Together, the bills can help create a climate where pay discrimination is not tolerated, and give the new administration the enforcement tools it needs to make real progress on pay equity.

Passage of both of these bills together is a critical step forward in our goal to close the persistent and sizable wage gap between men and women, and Sen. Reid could very well make the difference - good or bad.  We need Sen. Reid to put the same energy and priority on passing the Paycheck Fairness Act as he has for the Ledbetter bill. In his position as the Senate Majority Leader, Reid is in a position of power that could determine the fate of the Paycheck Fairness Act as well.

Take Action!

Call Sen. Reid now and urge him to support the Paycheck Fairness Act along with the Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.  Simply click on the "Take Action" link in the upper right corner or copy and paste the following URL into your Internet browser.  Then follow the instructions to place your call.http://capwiz.com/aauw/callalert/index.tt?alertid=12426006&type=TA

Spread the word and get others involved by forwarding this email to friends and family.  Call today for fair pay!

posted ‎‎Sep 8, 2008 1:52 PM‎‎ by Alicia Lindsay-Dietrich

April 30, 2008

As always, our potluck dinner was enjoyed by the 18 women and 2 men who were in attendance, where dishes ranging from chili, to spaghetti casserole were shared by all.

The floor was opened for announcements by Calia Lindsay who shared with those in attendance information regarding the upcoming “emergeNevada” fundraiser (5/16), and the Winning Washoe County training (5/22). The upcoming Immigration series at future DWWC meetings were announced, and Susan Severt presented the next DWWC series for the fall which will focus on “Nevada Legislature 101”

May 8th there will be an AARP event open to the public at the Senior Center regarding grass roots advocacy and talking to your pharmacist.

Robin, from New to You Computers announced their commitment to provide recycling efforts throughout the county of many of the electronics that people have difficulty disposing. She also emphasized the altruistic values of the business that provide low cost computers to consumers and training for those in our community who need specialized assistance.

Rudy Bartlett discussed breast cancer awareness and her involvement with prompting the use of a “Type 2 Breast Check Device” that allows women to increase their awareness.

Donna Clotz provided information regarding the AAUW and their continuing advocacy of promoting equal pay for women during equal work. She urged attendees to visit AAUW.org for more information on this important issue and to write Senator Ensign and express your opinion on this important matter.  Many in attendance would like Donna to return to a future meeting to discuss this important issue.

Gary Schmidt (candidate for District 4 County Commission) announced his attentions to run for office and his campaign issues which revolve around “Sensible growth, and Open Government”. He also discussed his view on the area’s structural deficits and the possibility of expanding the County Commission from 5 to 7 commissioners.

Maia Dickerson, from Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB) was the evening’s main speaker. She began her program by providing a bit of history regarding how KTMB began, in 1989, and provided a quick insight of how KTMB’s affiliation with Keep America Beautiful and the emphasis on litter prevention, waste recycling and beautification. Many have not heard of KTMB, but most know of the tree recycling program that is ran by KTMB after each Christmas.
Maia discussed the yearly litter index program that is measured by KTMB volunteers and then fielded questions regarding recycling and how the index score can promote community cleanups. She then reminded those in attendance of the upcoming Community Cleanup that will allow hundreds of volunteers a chance to clean up tons of open space trash in a short amount of time. This event scheduled for May 10th, will allow volunteers a 3 hour window to clean up their communities, and then celebrate this achievement with a free lunch. All are invited to participate and see first hand what a community can do when working together. For more information or to volunteer visit KTMB.org or call 851-5185.

A great time was experienced by all!            Submitted by Susan 4/30/08
