This
session offers two models that can help student affairs professionals develop and
implement a student learning-based assessment program. From the Sac State
model, participants can learn how to write clear departmental mission
statements, formulate planning goals, differentiate between indirect and direct
learning outcomes, and identify instruments for gathering data and/or measuring
outcomes. The Cal Lutheran model focuses on ways to assess the learning that
comes through community service, work for social justice, and co-curricular
service-learning events. It also addresses the question of why students think
it is important to serve.
Presenters: Lori Varlotta, Vice President of Student Affairs; Beth Merrit Miller, Director of Academic Advising and Career Center, Sacramento State University; Kirstine Odegard, Coordinator for Community Service, California Lutheran University
