CAGJʼs dedicated volunteers contribute their skills, time and money to work for a just local and global economy. CAGJ was founded by local activists who helped to organize the historic shutdown of the World Trade Organization meeting in 1999. We strive to carry on the protest's legacy of effective and creative collective action for global justice. Today CAGJ has three core programs: Food Justice Project, AGRA Watch and Trade Justice. The Food Justice Project seeks to strengthen local food economies everywhere, with a commitment to increasing access to healthy, locally grown food to those who need it most, and fighting for justice for immigrant workers. Our Trade Justice organizing aims to promote fair and just trade policies. AGRA Watch monitors the Gates Foundation's role in promoting a new green revolution in Africa, and aims to work in solidarity with social movements promoting agro-ecological alternatives. CAGJ is led by a Steering Committee that meets every other month, and we have one part-time staff person. Approved projects are funded by Heifer for 3 to 5 years. All Heifer projects “pass on the gift” of what they receive to others in their community. All projects contribute in some way to a community food system in which all members have high quality, culturally appropriate foods, especially those with genuine need, and all participants in that food system (especially farmers) have sustainable livelihoods. Please contact Colleen if interested in becoming a Heifer project in the Pacific NW. Also, we wanted to preserve an island way of life as well as the historic island farmlands. Real estate development was eating up farms; and those trying to make a living were finding themselves competing with corporate farms and processors while struggling to overcome the added costs of operating in the islands. The cooperative is developing a local northwest niche market for all-natural meat from grass fed animals that have been raised without the use of growth hormones, antibiotics or feed additives. Our membership now consists of 44 small producers of which 33 are located on the islands and 14 in the fertile Skagit, Samish and Nooksack River valleys.
