Traffic & Parking

THE DETAILED VERSION...

As a destination school attracting families from across the Lower Mainland, and with our 2008-09 enrollment at over 500 students, getting to and from our school safely and in an orderly manner is of paramount importance. Please read the following instructions carefully to ensure your child--and every other VTT student--benefits from the careful and considerate conduct of the adults in their care. There are specific rules regarding drop-off, pick-up and neighbourhood parking that MUST be followed.

Prefer to carpool? We have many families desiring to save on gas, avoid parking woes and reduce their carbon footprint. Contact Jennifer Shecter-Balin for help in finding carpooling buddies.

VEHICLE ACCESS

To drop off children at the main school entrance - 998 West 26th Ave.

The 26th Ave. driveway is a one directional thruwayVehicles must access 26th Ave. via Oak St. only and proceed east to the Talmud Torah driveway entrance.  Turn right and follow the flow of traffic through the driveway.  While in the driveway, when all vehicles have stopped and it is safe to do so, children may exit their vehicles.  Drivers must remain in their vehicles at all times and must keep moving!  Upon exiting the driveway onto 26th Ave., please turn right or left.
Do not proceed straight through to the Safeway parking lot.

To ease the access to 26th Ave., all vehicles should queue along the East side of Oak St. facing North, then turn right onto 26th Ave.  There is absolutely no left turn into the Talmud Torah driveway from the east.  Doing this is illegal and interrupts the flow of traffic.  A no left turn sign is posted at the driveway entrance.

If children require assistance when exiting their vehicles, please do not use the driveway, park your vehicle and walk them into the school.

To pick up children at main school entrance- 998 West 26th Ave.

Access 26th Ave via Oak St, proceed to the driveway entrance, and join the queue of vehicles.  Once the Talmud Torah driveway has reached vehicle capacity, all vehicles must queue on the South side of 26th Ave facing east, awaiting entry to the driveway.  DO NOT STOP ON THE SIDEWALK AS THIS BLOCKS PEDESTRIAN ACCESS.  If 26th Ave is also at capacity, the line up then extends to the East side of Oak St, between 26th Avenue and 27th Ave.  While queuing on 26th Ave only, if the line up has not yet moved forward, children may enter their vehicles.  Once the line up begins to move, you must follow suit and stay snug to the vehicle directly in front of you.

Children must never be picked up or dropped off on Oak St.  While in the pick up line you must always stay in your vehicle and keep moving.  If upon approaching the front of the line up your child has not yet exited the school, you must exit the driveway, turn right, proceed East on 26th Ave, and re-enter the driveway following the flow of traffic.

Never leave your vehicle unattended in the driveway or on the South side of 26th Ave.  G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Hospital’s access road to 28th Ave is strictly a private driveway and never to be used by Talmud Torah parents wanting to gain access to 28th Ave or the Beth Israel parking lot.

Preschool Parent Parking

The Beth Israel Synagogue has generously secured preschool parking space for our school on their parking lot. Please look for the signs that indicate where to park if you are a preschool parent and want to walk your child into the school.  Please remember that parking is for a short time only as indicated on the sign. Vancouver Talmud Torah is not responsible for traffic tickets issued or towing charges.

PARKING IN THE SAFEWAY PARKING LOT

Diamond Parking, Safeway and the mall tenants have graciously agreed to allow our families to BRIEFLY park during morning drop-off (until 8:45 AM). Should you choose this option over the drivethru (preferred), please make note of the following:
  • Be aware of the posted time limits.
  • Park in the furthest available spots, not those closest to the school.
  • Never double park.
  • Only park in properly marked parking stalls.
  • Never park in the Safeway loading bay.
  • Do not park alongside the Shell gas station.
  • Do not use handicapped zones for parking.
  • Failure to abide by these rules will result in the vehicle being ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.
During afternoon pick-up, a purchase must be made at ANY of the mall businesses prior to leaving the lot. Failure to patronize a business may result in a ticket and/or your car being towed. Using the school drivethru remains one best option for drop-off and pick-up. Limited street parking exits on Oak Street between 10 AM and 3 PM. Preschool and kindergarten parents may choose this parking option.

Usage of the Safeway parking lot is a privilege and not to be taken lightly, therefore, do not drop off or pick up your children anywhere in the Safeway parking lot leaving them unattended and responsible for finding their own way through the traffic to the school.   This is extremely dangerous and puts the safety of your child at risk.

If anything should ever happen involving a pedestrian and a vehicle, Safeway is liable and our parking privileges would be terminated.  In order to maintain a good relationship with Canada Safeway, Diamond Parking and the mall tenants, and to continue our very liberal usage of their lot, it is mandatory that we all do our part to follow the rules of their management.

The 26th Ave exit/entrance to Safeway parking lot will be blocked off during our peak times.  If at any time a driver is acting in an unsafe and irresponsible manner, their license plate number will be recorded and given to the Vancouver Police Department for follow up.

CROSSING OAK STREET

Students who walk or take the southbound Oak Street bus should NOT cross Oak Street at West 26th Avenue.  THEY SHOULD ONLY CROSS WITH THE TRAFFIC SIGNAL AT WEST KING EDWARD AVENUE.

PARKING IN FRONT OF MAIN OFFICE

PLEASE NOTE THAT PARKING IS NOT ALLOWED IN FRONT OF THE MAIN OFFICE.  THIS SPACE IS RESERVED FOR VTT STAFF ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK THIS SPACE EVEN FOR A SHORT TIME.

Please be responsible and choose safety over convenience.
THE "COLES NOTES" VERSION...

  • Whenever possible, use the school drivethru. It is the most efficient and safest way to get your children to school.
  • To enter the school drivethru, you must come northbound on Oak St. and turn right at 26th. It is impossible to enter the drivethru coming eastbound on 26th Avenue. This applies to every drop-off ad pick-up. NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • Parking in the Safeway lot is a privilege, not a right. Be mindful of handicapped spaces and park furthest from the school to allow shoppers quick and easy access to the stores.
  • If you choose to use the Safeway lot, business must be conducted at any of the mall's tenants prior to walking off the lot. Diamond Parking patrols the lot and reserves the right to ticket and/or tow should parents park and leave without patronizing a business.
  • Parking in the Safeway lot before 8:45 AM does not require a mall purchase. Leaving your vehicle in the lot after this time runs the risk of ticketing/towing.
  • For Preschool and Kindergarten pick-up, street parking on Oak Street is available from 10 AM to 3 PM.
  • Congregation Beth Israel has set aside a few spots for Preschool parking. Should you choose to park in those assigned spaces, you are expected to be brief or risk ticket and/or towing.
  • Parking in front of the main office is absolutely prohibited at all times.
