As part of the Health and Career Education program, we have introduced a peer mediation and conflict resolution program led by students in the upper intermediate grades. The primary goals for this program in the first year were to train selected students in grades six and seven in peer mediation, and for these student volunteers to play an active role throughout the school and student body in the playground and later in sit-down mediations with other students. Our program is based on a comprehensive peer mediation/conflict resolution curriculum developed by the CRU (Conflict Resolution Unlimited) Institute based out of Bellevue, Washington. The program has successfully been implemented in a variety of elementary and middle schools across North America with tangible benefits for the entire school population. Our peer mediators can be found working out on the school playground every recess and are available to help students of all ages with conflicts of all shapes and sizes. |
