At Vancouver Talmud Torah preschool, we are dedicated to providing the highest quality Early Childhood Education program within a secure, nurturing, and stimulating Jewish environment. We are a play-based program that uses developmentally appropriate practice to ensure children's spiritual, emotional, physical, cognitive, creative and social growth. THE ENVIRONMENT Our preschool classes are arranged around a variety of learning centres that are planned to give children maximum opportunities to EXPLORE, DISCOVER, CREATE and LEARN. These areas provide the children with the ability to make choices; interact with materials and peers; participate in imaginative play; learn to think and problem-solve; develop fine and gross motor skills; expand their vocabulary and communication skills; and be responsible to themselves and to others. THE PROGRAM Our preschool programs offer many opportunities to stimulate development of the whole child. With dual themes running simultaneously in Judaic and general studies, the children are cognitively, socially, creatively, physically, linguistically and emotionally enriched. In addition, the children meet with our drama and music specialists once a week. JEWISH LIFE The children are introduced to Jewish holiday stories, vocabulary, and traditions that are age-appropriate. On Fridays, the children participate in a Kabbalat Shabbat (welcoming of the Sabbath) service experiencing the traditional rituals of Shabbat. We recognize that the earliest experiences of life are often the most lasting, and we want to ensure the development of a warm, positive attitude in the children towards their Jewish identity. In addition, once a month, the entire preschool comes together for a community Sabbath celebration. ATTENDANCE School is in session from 8:20 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. five days a week (or 12:30 p.m. to 3:20 p.m. for afternoon preschool). Early dismissal Fridays (for the Sabbath) are in effect from November to March. COMMUNICATION We have an open door policy and invite families to be part of our program. Teachers are available to respond to parent inquiries any time during the year. Parent-Teacher conferences occur in the fall and in the spring. PARENTS AS PARTNERS Parent helpers are a valuable asset to our teachers and children as well as to the enrichment of our programs. Parent ideas and involvement are always welcome and encouraged. Active parents make for a better school. TOILET TRAINING Children must be independently toilet trained and wearing underwear before they can be accepted into preschool. However, we are willing to work with families towards this endeavour. Play is our vehicle--our way to connect with each child. |
