ESL Program

Our school offers a well-established English as a Second Language Program staffed by a professionally trained ESL teacher. It provides language support to all Grade 1-7 students whose first language is not English. Upon arrival to VTT, students are placed in a regular class according to their age and are withdrawn from that class for ESL instruction based on their individual needs. The initial emphasis of the program is on social language acquisition and developing reading and writing skills so the child can function in the classroom and on the playground. As their language base grows, academic content is added. Parents are considered important partners in their child’s English language acquisition. The ESL teacher is available as a liaison between school staff and the parents as well as helping the family gain an understanding of the Canadian school system and culture.
