For this project in Westford, Massachusetts, a floor section beneath linoleum sheet flooring had rotted over time and needed to be replaced. The client opted to have the section cut out and replaced with new to allow for the installation of new ceramic tiles to be installed for a fresher appearance in their full bathroom. This recent project was done in Medford to a home that was newly purchased and in desperate need of an upgraded bathroom space since it is the only bathroom servicing this warm home. The homeowners decided to speed up their moving into their new home by performing the bathroom demolition themselves in a matter of 2 days and were very successful in preparing the room getting down to the guts of the bathroom with only a few remaining areas that still needed a professional TLC for demolition like the removal of the tile backerboard surrounding the bathtub and the oddly elevated floor that was a good distance above the threshhold. Before
In the above picture, you will see where we needed to frame above the bathtub/showering area as there was an exhaust fan installed in the bath and showering area in the center of that newly framed area which needed to be removed. We installed ductwork to the roof and installed ductwork to a new location in the middle of the bathroom ceiling where we installed a combination ceiling fan and bathroom light. It was originally desired by the homeowner to remove the soffit above the bathtub and showering area but upon opening the soffit we discovered there were pipes that existed within that area so we removed the existing exhaust fan and created a new soffit to hide the existing pipes.
It was discovered that there was a slab of concrete more than We ended up demolishing the existing floor down to the joists at which time we discovered that the existing plumbing was not installed correctly which would present upcoming problems for the new homeowners so we worked to get it fixed for the homeowner and keep them on schedule for moving into their new home. We installed a new level subfloor and installed and arranged for an essential pipe that ran through the room to be protected and covered with the appropriate materials and still create a smooth floor surface for the homeowner's enjoyment. After demolishing the existing tile backerboard down to the studs
On this wall (shown below) there existed a large mirror with a row of large exposed lightbulbs protruding from that wall lighting unit that might be reminiscent of a theatre dressing room than a nice warm home. The homeowner chose the remove the dated lighting and install a classic oval mirror with nickel sconces flanking each side warm up the room and allow for the room to have the classic designer touch that was needed to match the rest of the house. On the right hand side of the picture below, you will see there is a silver-toned towel hanger which was existing from the prior owner. It will be replaced by a new and updated nickel version of itself and it is flanked to the left of a converted dated medicine cabinet from faux wood trim cabinetry to a framed, inset shelving space with sheetrock for the homeowner to use for decoration or utilitarian purposes. We chose not to put the cabinetry back as it negatively impacted the modern sconces that were selected to accent the room. The bathroom is nearly done and ready for the installation of the granite threshhold, new white cabinet to hold the new coordinating granite sink and the toilet.
