Mrs. Carol Mine
8th Grade Physical Science email address: cmine@vol.org voice mail extension: 53 A.M. Tutoring – Tuesdays in C7 - 7:50 to 8:10 a.m. Quality work is always required – I expect all students to go that “extra mile”. Student Responsibilities: Have all supplies everyday in class. Raise hand and wait to be called on. Follow directions first time given. Keep hands, feet, and objects to self. Don't borrow from other students ~ ask me ~ I'll lend occasionally. Remain in assigned seat. Leave the desk free of trash. Failure to live up to student responsibilities may result in demerits, procedure notices, call home to parents, etc... Supplies needed in class every day: school agenda textbook - covered pen (blue or black ink) red pen highlighter notebook with pocket divider/ pocket folder looseleaf Grading: Homework = 1 test grade Quizzes = 1 test grade Tests = 1 test grade per assessment Projects/Reports = 1 test grade per Exam = 2 test grades Homework: Some sort of homework is given nightly. Homework may not always be written assignments. Homework may consist of reading and taking notes, answering questions, completing worksheets, drawings, and/or studying. Getting tests, personal notes in the agenda, project sheets, study guides,...signed is also considered homework. Students MUST study nightly along with any written work assigned. Students will begin each nine weeks with 100 points for a homework grade. For any assignment that is not done or mostly incomplete, five points will be deducted. For any incomplete assignments, three points will be deducted. Projects/Reports turned in late will drop one letter grade per late day. Students will receive a procedure notice for any homework not done or incomplete. The procedure notice MUST be signed by a parent by the next school day. If not a demerit will be issued. All homework, test dates, and project due dates are written on the board and announced for the students to copy into their agenda. Homework will also be on the Homework Hotline by 4:00p.m. The only excuse for incomplete or not done work that I accept is a written note from the parents. Signed Tests/Notes: All tests and quizzes of 79 and below require a parent’s signature. These are the only tests/quizzes that I request back. In order to encourage the students to return these papers promptly, I will give two points as extra credit if done so the very next school day. By the second day if the paper is still not returned signed, five points will be deducted from the homework grade and a procedure notice will be given. Any note written in the agenda must be signed by the next school day or a consequence will be issued. Quizzes: Announced and pop quizzes will be given periodically. Nightly studying is a must. Tests: Tests may be given at least every two weeks. The test dates are announced several days in advance and on occasion may need to be pushed back – but never moved ahead. Exams: Exams are given every quarter. Study guides will be given, but basically the student studies from their old tests, their notes, and textbook. It is imperative that the students keep all old tests, quizzes, worksheets, and notes taken throughout the quarter for exam preparation. Students may be exempt from the 4th nine weeks exam if the following requirements are met: the student received no less than two A’s and one B for the previous three nine weeks and the student has an A average going into the 4th nine weeks exam. Final Average: Earning a U in the fourth nine weeks will result in failing the subject for the year. Make-Up Work: Any homework or classwork that a student misses because of absence must be made up within 2 days of their return to school or it will count as work not done resulting in minus 5 from homework. I will not ask the student for absent work. It is the student’s responsibility to turn the late assignment to me. Call the homework hotline for the assignments. Students need to get notes given in class on the day(s) they were absent. Notes should be copied from a classmate BEFORE coming to the class. Class time will not be allowed for copying missed notes. Any tests missed due to an absence must be made up the day I assign starting at 7:30 a.m. in the office. The student should ask me for a make-up time as soon as they return to school. On occasion I will give a make-up test after school for special circumstances. Please send me a note. I do not give make-up tests during classtime – the student will miss new items and will always be catching up. If a student is absent the day(s) before an announced test and comes to school on the test day, they will be expected to take the test unless I receive a note asking otherwise. In cases of long absences, arrangements will be made on an individual basis to allow more time for missed worked to be made up. Extra Credit: I will periodically give extra credit when it pertains to the topic we are presently studying. All extra credit assignments turned in must be of quality work. The extra credit will be added to the homework grade before the final averaging. No extra credit will be given on an individual basis and no extra credit will be given the last two weeks of a nine weeks. Tutoring: My morning tutoring day is Tuesdays– 7:50 to 8:10 in room C7. I will answer individual questions first, and then I can do an over all review. Students are also welcomed to come to my room and study by themselves.
I am looking forward to a very productive year. |
