Making Darfur a Priority

If you drive past Vine Street this week, you may notice a sea of small orange flags stretching across the front lawn. This past Sunday, 400 flags were prayerfully placed in the ground in remembrance of our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives during the conflict in Darfur, Sudan.

Each flag represents 1,000 people who have died and 6,250 others displaced from their homes. That's a total of 400,000 casualties and 2.5 million homeless -- more than the population of the Nashville metro area. During the prayer vigil Sunday morning, Vine Street members were joined by several visitors, including Susan Pankowsky from West End Synagogue and Judy Saks from Tennesseans Against Genocide. In spite of the cold, participants sang, prayed, and reflected on their power to make a difference. You can join them by signing a postcard at www.addyourvoice.org, urging the president-elect to make peace in Darfur a priority.
