Have you noticed the hiker at the church? He’s popped up on posters all over the building. He has a map and is looking right at you through a pair of binoculars. He may be looking for something, a landmark perhaps, a pass, or a trail; or he may just be exploring the fascinating details of the landscape. He may be lost, but he won’t admit it – he’s a guy, after all. I like to think of him as a regular chap with an adventurous spirit, someone who is ready for new discoveries.
A small group of us went on an eye-opening expedition during the past few months; we explored the broad and varied landscapes of Christian Education, and we had our perspectives stretched in the most wonderful ways. We noticed things we hadn’t noticed before, asked questions we had never dreamed of asking, and thoroughly enjoyed our conversations. We loved the adventure so much, that we decided to become trail guides and take our friends along for the discovery. Who are the people, you wonder, who want to be trail guides? Hope Hodnett, Robin Porter, Pat Cole, Camille Biter, Sarah Combs, Greg Bailey and Thomas Kleinert.
We know that many of our members and friends are looking for new ways for adults to learn together and build relationships in small groups. The world of Christian Education is full of possibilities, and we want to invite you to have your perspectives stretched as well. What we have in mind is a series of conversations around some basic questions like, What is Christian Education? Why do we educate? What do we need to know? How are we doing? What stands in our way?
We will have a workshop on January 30 and 31 especially for Sunday school teachers, and in March we will offer two 5-week courses for adults of all ages; one on Wednesday nights, and another one on Sunday mornings. This is no fieldtrip to the Sunday school museum – we’ll be trailblazing! Look for more information in upcoming newsletters and online in January.
