Second Week of VBS at Vine Street

Julia Matthews

This is our second week at Camp E.D.G.E!  We discovered God in the things we do and in the people we see.  We learned to follow God's word and to choose the right path.    We began our day in a morning assembly and music.  The rest of the day's activities included Rex Plex, Science, and art!  Everyone can't wait to come back next week!

Experience and Discover God Everywhere!

International Hosting Opportunity

Sister Cities of Nashville is looking for housing for three recently graduated German students who will be fulfilling civil service obligations at the Martha O’Bryan Center in east Nashville and the Preston Taylor Ministries in north Nashville.

The Martha O’Bryan intern, Christoph Franke, will be working in the afterschool program at the Martha O’Bryan Center located in the middle of the James A. Cayce Homes in East Nashville.  His hours will typically be from 10 to 7 Monday through Friday.  The Sister Cities Organization will provide a car for him to drive so that he will have his own transportation.   His stay is scheduled to last from August, 2009, through June, 2010.

Laura Vibrans will be helping in the reading program at Preston Taylor ministries near TSU.  Her hours will be 12-6 Monday-Friday with occasional weekend and evening outings during the school year.  During the summer they would be roughly 10-4 Monday-Friday.  She has the opportunity to carpool to work if her host family lives in the Green Hills or West End area.

Victoria Weimann will be volunteering for the Siloam Family Health Center in the 12 South area.  Her stay will also be from August, 2009, through June, 2010.

The ideal living arrangements would be with families with high school age children, but younger families, empty nesters, apartment or college age roommate situations are also options.  The family would need to provide a bedroom and meals.  We’d like to find one living situation for each intern for the year, but are also open to shorter periods.

Hosting is a great experience.  Consistent with Sister Cities’ goal to promote international goodwill through citizen diplomacy,  you’ll get to know an outstanding young person from another country, speak German with a native speaker, build a relationship that could lead to international travel, and further strengthen the connections between Nashville, and our German Sister City, Magdeburg.

To volunteer to host or to get additional information, please contact Burkley Allen at 383-6604 or burknewt@aol.com.

Friends and Family at Vine Street

Thank you all for the support last week as I counseled CYF camp in Nebraska.  To know that your thoughts and prayers were with me was a wonderful blessing.  The camping season taking place between Disciples and our United Church of Christ brothers and sisters in Nebraska started with a bang at our CYF camp and I think it will be a great year filled with peace, education and fun.  A note of special thanks to Hope, Robin and all the youth who sent letters of support (and a bit of camp rivalry) that I received during camp.  It was so nice to read thoughtful, loving, hand-written notes.  Your ministry is just another example of Vine Street’s loving embrace.  Keep it up and know your thoughts and prayers were felt and they made my week SO much more fulfilling than even before.
Peace and love,
Steve Mason
