The Visitor - September 3, 2008

Words from Thomas Thomas Kleinert

Of all the books on my desk, one is special. It’s about the size of a small-town phone book. It’s bound in red cloth. It’s made in the U. S. of 100% post-consumer recycled paper. And the best part, all its pages are blank. It’s a book waiting for a story.

On Sunday, that book will be in the sanctuary. It will sit there on a lectern or a stand, open at page one, ready to receive and give shape to our story, Vine Street’s future story. One by one, it will receive some 150 one-liners that capture the experience and key insights of all our prayer triplets. Line by line, the story will begin to emerge.

We will add a condensed report of all the findings that the groups of three jotted down during the course of the summer, findings in the ministry areas of visionary leadership, relationship experiences, programmatic emphases, accountable management, contextual relevance, pastoral leadership, people of passion, people of position, church growth, communication and conflict. These are the areas and topics fifty-four of our members and friends wrestled with in ten triplet meetings, talking, listening, praying, and discussing. The story will emerge from their work. We owe them a big thank you.

Next week, on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14, the book will again be the focus of our attention and work. In two workshops we will first outline three potential future scenarios for Vine Street, and then we will determine which scenario represents most faithfully what we perceive to be God’s call and our commitment. That scenario will become the story that will fill the blank pages.

I hope you will be able to worship with us on Sunday as we celebrate the conclusion of the Summer of Prayer and begin the next stage of our spiritual-strategic journey.

I look at the book in front of me. It is awe-inspiring to think that on Sunday it will become the scrap book of our future. What a great way to observe a historic anniversary year. May God bless The Journey.

Property Committee / Volunteers

I am planning a work day on Saturday, September 6th OR the 13th, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Please let me know which day you can be there so that I can plan accordingly.  The main emphasis will be on the narthex, but there’s also a lot of work that we can do outside.

We will need lots of hands if we are going to complete this artwork in time for our anniversary. Don't miss this rare and wonderful opportunity to discover and create meaning in our worship space!
