101 Lectures

  • Audience: Undergrads with a solid grasp of basic CS (algorithms, data structures, logic), but not necessarily other material.
  • Goal: To spark interest in new topics in computer science, especially topics where there exists an opportunity to learn more within the University (typically, a class of some sort).
  • Speaker:  Typically a UT CS faculty member.
  • Topic:  Entirely up to the speaker.  Encourage them to simply talk about that which they're most passionate about.  The lecture is as much for them in particular as it is the topic they choose.
  • Flyer at least 10 days before event.  Avoidable low turnouts at 101 lectures could hurt ACM's reputation or make the professor feel that they're wasting their time.
  • Make in-class announcements wherever is most appropriate.  Honors classes will probably result in a higher yield.
  • Make sure room has computer station w/ projector for slides, if needed.
  • Add to "Talks and Reading Groups" calendar (ask Nick, Mark Reitblatt, or Yonatan)
  • Probably don't add to "Free Food" calendar since we should discourage eat-and-runs for these events
  • Order light food (cookies, donuts, milk (+soy milk)...)
  • Bring
    • 1 gallon skim, 1/2 gallon 2%, 1/2 gallon soy milk
    • 5 dozen cookies (Tiff's Treats)
    • Cups
    • Napkins
    • Small plates (optional)
  • After talk, start a quick applause, thank professor, and give them a binary longhorn t-shirt.  Ask for size beforehand.
