If you’re a University of Michigan student:Undergraduate students are encouraged to join to gain valuable hands-on experience in medical device design and repair. If you’re an engineering student, you’ll use this knowledge in your senior design class, and in any other future design projects. If you’re pre-med, this gives you valuable experience with the types of devices you’ll ultimately be working with. If you’re a business student, you can practice writing proposals and business plans, and learn about social entrepreneurship and designing products for the “bottom of the pyramid.” Graduate students are also encouraged to participate – you can get complement your research with work outside your specific field, and gain experience in project management. As the group expands, all students will benefit from relationships with industry and other campus contacts.
Here’s what you can do to get involved:
If you're a Michigan student group that wants your members to earn community service hours through M-HEAL: Members of UM Engineering societies are welcome to come to any WMR repair or inventory trip! The only condition is that the society must pay the transportation costs of all its members (usually around $15 per car of five people). Please send an e-mail to mheal-contact@umich.edu indicating your interest, and we'll share more logistics information with you.
If you’re a University of Michigan faculty or staff member, or community member with experience in engineering, healthcare, or business:We need your help! Our group is looking for mentorship from local professionals in all areas: medical device repair, medical technology design for the developing world, providing care to underserved areas and making our devices available to hospitals that need them. If you’re interested in providing this kind of support, please e-mail us at mheal-contact@umich.edu.
Organizations or individuals that would like to give finiancial and/or material support to M-HEAL are encouraged to see our Sponsorship page. |
