Featuring:

Prof. James Kasting and Prof. Peter Ward in "The Battle of the Goddesses: Gaia vs Medea".

Hosted by: AbGradCon and the UW Astrobiology Program

The Gaia hypothesis, put forward by James Lovelock in the 1970's, states that Earth's biosphere behaves as a self-stabilizing super-organisms. This idea has been countered most recently by Peter Ward, author of the book "The Medea Hypothesis: is life on Earth ultimately self-destructive?".

The debate will be followed by a reception in the Kane lobby  titled "Ask an Astrobiologist", where the audience is invited to discuss the origin and the evolution of life in the Universe with Astrobiology graduate students. Refreshments will be served.
