The conference will be followed by a workshop which will offer a platform to further develop interdisciplinary astrobiological research ideas between students from different departments, universities and countries. The aim is to form brainstorm research groups to develop proposals that can be submitted to funding agencies. The workshop will take place following ABGradCon on July 20-22, at Pack Forest (near Seattle, transportation and lodging will be provided). Workshop organizers and attendees will post research questions that may be developed, and attendees will choose which questions they wish to explore further. Focus groups will be formed with the aim of addressing these research questions and will be composed of students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. These research groups will develop and present proposals, and the participants of the workshop will vote on the best proposals. The three most highly ranked proposals will be sent to NAI and published in the NAI newsletter, Authorship rights will be kept. The proposal can then be sent to funding agencies for the realization of these research goals. If you are interested in participating in the workshop, please tick the respective box in the registration form for ABGradCon'09.For further information, contact Marina António at quimarina@wsu.edu. How will it function?
The participants will be divided in groups of 3-4 people. The groups will be formed by the organizers based on field of research, institution and research interests. Participants within the same research field and from the same institution will not be placed in the same Focus Group in order to stimulate interdisciplinarity and institutional collaboration. Through several stages of discussion (details can be provided by request, quimarina@wsu.edu) with both organizers and other Focus Groups, each group will improve its proposal until a final stage where the proposals will be evaluated in the format of a grant panel.
