Philosophy

Our philosophy was written to let players have an idea of what Dissendium is about: its Alternate Universe direction, player-driven theme expansion, balance of story with realism, and a note on conduct.
Our definition of Alternate Universe is following a logical extrapolation from one twist in canonical history. The game's direction, although grounded in canon, ultimately depends on the player. Original characters should create unique history, discover artifacts and oddities, and share new knowledge. Yet collaboration with players should be conducted in a way that integrates their ideas with game canon in a consistent, organized manner. Therefore we require that all original intellectual property (IP) be applied for, allowing us to share contributed information with the playerbase and properly give credit.
In the world of Dissendium, the story is first, but realism is a close second. We favor strict IC consequences for actions, including the possibility of character death. While not always desired, the element of risk creates a dynamic that enhances theme. This is where the stat system is used to facilitate RP. We strive for a system that is robust yet flexible, simple yet fair. It is a tool for--not the end of--cooperative storytelling. Communication about character intention and plot direction is very much encouraged.
Finally, there are some expectations for both players and staffers alike. Players should act like the adults they are. That is our prime reason for restricting the game for those 18 and over; it is not to create a TS haven. In this vein, our policies are kept simple. If players disregard them, it means we must take the time to handle that instead of running cool plots and making improvements. Players should expect some things of staff as well. We hold ourselves to professionalism, consistency, and as transparency as possible without compromise of privacy. This transparency applies to staff procedures, conflict resolutions, and game-wide decisions. There's an open-door policy to feedback and questions unless otherwise stated. We strive to provide sound reasoning. We hope to constantly improve.
With this in mind, let's have a damn good time.
