Hello and Welcome to the 2009 Summer Trek. The Satilla River is considered to be one of the most scenic and natural rivers in south Georgia. Originating in Ben Hill County, the river takes a free flowing and winding course for 260 miles before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. During our trek we will be exploring approximately 25 miles of this beautiful river by canoe. Many forms of wildlife are to be found along the shores of the Satilla so if we are lucky we will get our chance to view those critters in their home. Our Trek will carry us along what historically was a great transportation and subsistence resource for the Creek Indian Nation. While little evidence of this great tribe is to be seen here today, the scenic beauty of the Satilla still echoes why the Creek Nation made this their home. Our three day journey down the Satilla will take place after we first gather together at Camp Tol-o-chee were we will meet for our shake down check and get our equipment and food for the trek. Have your swimwear ready so we can get wet. We have some games to play and some LNT info also that first day and then later that night a time around the Campfire. After our days on the Satilla we will come back to Camp Tol-o-chee. There you will enjoy some time for shooting sports and South Georgia Mountain Biking minus the mountain of course. Then the next leg of your trek is by kayaks, where you will get to explore several creeks and river waterways out to Bird Island. Bird Island is a private island recently donated to the scouts where the Leave No Trace lessons come in handy. Included with this letter is the equipment list with marked items provided by us and the other suggested equipment you will need to bring. Any questions can be emailed to me at (ponne@bellsouth.net). Thanks for your time and we look forward to a great trek. Thomas Below is your Suggested equipment list. The Items marked with a “p” are provided by us. The items with marked with a “* “are highly recommended for a safe and fun trek. All other items are to your own choosing. Remember this is a river trek where Leave No Trace principles apply so we will “Pack-in and Pack-out” Everything. While tents are provided you may choose to bring your own. If so please remember footprint space of the camping area is small so we use a 3-4 man tent for the crew members. If you have any questions feel free to email me.
