Singlemode - (or SM fiber or fibre)
Typically has a core size of 9um and can be found in applications such as, broadband, telecommunications, FTTx, and general data comms. Depending on your testing requirements, we have Light Sources & Power meters which will report on attenuation (or loss) across the fiber.

Multimode - (or MM fiber or fibre)
MM fiber can have a core diameter of 62.5um or 50um.
Mostly used for communication over shorter distances, such as within a building or on a campus. Typical multimode links have data rates of 10 Mbit/s to 10 Gbit/s over link lengths of up to 600 meters, more than sufficient for the majority of premises applications.
We are seeing more and more 50um fiber called OM3 fiber being installed for high speed gigabit networks, this fiber has been optimised for use with lasers to achieve these speeds.
OM3 (50um) usually has an aqua colour protective jacket and 62.5um usually orange or grey jacket.
In inventory, at the moment, the correct test tools for the OM3 fiber are;

- FLU,DTX-GFM - application related testing
- FLU,DTX-MFM - certification
- CMA4500/5000 OTDR - with 50um launch cable
