Orientation DayAt the beginning of each school year, the secondary students and teachers participate in an Orientation Day outing at a local park, where they experience team-building and cooperative games. Elementary students have their games on Campus. Orientation Day brings teachers and students together and welcomes new students to the school.
Sendai World FestaEach September, TIS participates in the Sendai World Festa sponsored by the Sendai International Center and showcases the many international facets of the Sendai community. TIS students and teachers and families set up a booth to promote TIS and discuss the educational opportunities available at our school.
Fall FestivalTohoku International School hosts its annual Fall Festival each October. Our Parent Action Committee works with the school to plan and coordinate an afternoon of games, activities, food, and fun for all. This fund-raising event supports student and school activities and programs.
Winter and Spring ConcertsMajorconcerts are held each winter and spring to showcase the musical anddramatic talents of our students. Elementary and secondary studentsprepare a delightful repertoire of seasonal songs and practice them aspart of their music programs. In addition to songs performed bystudents from all levels at the school, recent Spring Concerts haveprovided highly entertaining adaptations of musicals, such as the Little Shop of Horrors. It is amazing to see how well the students perform when "the lights goup!" Ski TripsThewhole school crackles with excitement when ski season falls uponSendai. The elementary students, families, and teachers spend afun-filled day on the slopes of the local ski field, Spring Valley. Themiddle and high school students and teachers traditionally join in anovernight trip to Mt. Zao, where the skiing is excellent, and theexcitement of "Culture Night" highlights the evening.
Exhibition Night Atthe annual Exhibition Night held in May, the teachers and students ofTohoku International School are proud to acknowledge and highlightexamples of the outstanding work they have accomplished throughout theyear. Students display their talents and achievements across all areasof the curriculum.
Science ExhibitionOur students astounded the Tohoku University students and faculty withtheir high-level presentations of their special culminating scienceprojects.
Extended Field TripsTohoku International School is committed to extended educational opportunities outside of school. In addition to field trips to the Sendai community, secondary school students have had opportunities to visit Hokkaido, Hiroshima and other sites in Japan. Students in 2008 traveled to Vietnam to work in an orphanage with over 60 children. In previous years, our students have helped build houses in regions of the Philippines, Fiji and New Zealand.
End-Of-Year-PicnicA culminating event, the End-of-Year Picnic, marks the successful completion of another school year. Students, teachers, and families come together at a local park for a relaxing day of food and fun. Secondary students are responsible for organizing and leading teams made up of students from each grade level that "compete" with each other in games that require cooperation and communication.
Graduation Ceremony Tohoku International School is proud to honor students who have successfully completed their high school graduation requirements at the annual Graduation Ceremony. Our graduates have been successful at gaining admission to universities throughout the world.
