By Alphabetical Order - As of 6/6/2008 Black – existing committees at Stone Lakes to be copied by us 5th Grade Celebration Committee - (Jennifer Wojcik / Kelly Riegelmayer) As the seniors of our elementary school, these students need to be reminded of how proud we are of them and how much we will miss them when they are gone. This is our way of bidding them a fond farewell and recognizing them for their outstanding excellence. We put together a party for them to tell them how we appreciate their accomplishments. Awards Committee – (place name(s) here) This committee focuses on the achievements of the PTA, and then submits write-ups to the County and State for various PTA awards. Bike Committee - (place name(s) here) Plan bike safety program with grade teachers and PTA Council traffic safety coordinator. Use Bicycle Safety materials in office to help with planning. Recruit parents to help with bicycle safety stations, try to arrange (gather donations of used bikes) for extra bicycles so all children have one. Coordinate with school police. Book Fair Committee - (Debi Griffin) Timber Lakes sponsors two book fairs each school year; one in the fall and one in the spring. The first day of the book fair is called "preview day." On this day, all the students preview all the books for sale. Many students will bring home a "wish list." These are books they have selected as favorites and should have the table number where the book can be found, if the parent wishes to purchase it for the child. After preview day, the book fair is open for purchases. Watch for the scheduled hours. For the younger grades, parents can send money to school with the child, and an adult volunteer will help the child choose which book he/she chooses to purchase. Some parents send a list with the title of the book(s), the cost of each book, and a check made out to "Timber Lakes Elementary". The profits from the book fair are used to purchase additional books for the Timber Lakes Library and classroom resources. BUDs Club – Brothers, Uncles, and Dads Club - (place name(s) here) A combination of school faculty members, dads and other male figures…we strive to assist teachers with small projects, for example during times like the preplanning period. At the start of the school year, interest forms will be placed in the student information packets with invitations to attend the first BUDs Club meeting. From there, the BUDs Club members will became an important part of PTA and the Timber Lakes Elementary community. We can hold a BUDs Club Pancake Pigout to attend breakfast with their student before the start of the school day. Besides spending time eating a special meal with their students, table tents were placed around the room with suggested questions to discuss during their time together. The BUDs Club can also coordinate the BUDding Readers program to coincide with the school’s Book Fair. BUD Club members can be invited to come to school and read to classes before the start of the school day to show students that real men read. The forming of the BUDs Club will increase male involvement and visibility at the school. Campus Beautification Committee - (Christine Zimmerman / Erin / Janice)) By encouraging students as well as promoting community awareness, our committee helps maintain the appearance on our school campus. Our plans are to develop various planting projects and recycling campaigns. We take pride in the appearance of our home. Let’s all work towards keeping our school campus clean and beautiful! Corporate Sponsors Committee - (Martha O’Connell – Stone Lakes teacher) Our job is to be the liaison between local Partners-in-Education and the PTA to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship. We also encourage and facilitate the Partners to provide services as well as products to our students, teachers and staff so we may offer a higher quality of education. Fundraising Committee - (Jack Benigno / Sunny Schwentner/ Zaymee Rivera) PTA is an educational association, not a fundraising organization. PTA continues to meet its purposes through new ideas, enthusiasm, opportunities and challenges. However, in order for PTAs to accomplish their goals, they understand that some finances are needed. Fundraising is responsible for looking at ways to procure those funds necessary to meet the PTA budget and projects. We help to ensure that we get the money needed to make all of our special occasions possible. We are able to work with companies that sell certain items. For the amount of items we sell, we get to keep part of the proceeds to fund our PTA! Try to remember that next time you see a fundraiser. Also, keep in mind that the PTA allocates funds towards the needs of the school as well in such areas like listening centers, aiding in specials and other school curriculum. Grandparents Committee - (Susan Brown) This committee serves the seniors and lets us share experiences with the children. We also need to inspire the grandparents to come out and help in any way they can. Health and Safety Committee - (place name(s) here) Provide resources and information to families, educators, communities and students that will help to promote the health, safety and well being of children and families. We are encouraged to offer programs and activities that help to responsibly assess and intervene in the health, safety and environment of all children, pre-natal through youth. This includes practical, as well as, contemporary ethical issues in the areas that affect our children. Hospitality Committee – (Nora Britt / Sunny Schwentner) The hospitality is one of the really “FUN” parts of PTA. We are lucky enough to coordinate and host many different events that benefit the students and their parents, as well as Stone Lakes’ teachers and staff. Activities from the past include: --Planning and providing meals to our wonderful teachers and staff during various busy times of the year to reward them and help make their days a bit easier (pre-planning week, teacher conference night, holiday time, FCAT week, teacher appreciation week) --Supporting Ms. Carlock during her “coffee with the principal” meetings with parents by providing setup and light refreshments --Meeting with parents of kindergarteners on the first day of school during our “boo-hoo coffee” to reassure them and acquaint them with our school and PTA --Helping out the P.E. department as needed during Field Day week --Hosting a small ceremony with refreshments for our awesome 5th graders during DARE graduation --Meeting and providing snacks for children and parents attending Kindergarten Open House --Having “Family Fun Nights” throughout the year. These are evening events that students and parents are invited to free of charge to enjoy games, music and fun activities. Jump Rope for Heart Committee – (place name(s) here) This committee assists in a fundraiser that gives funding to the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease and promote healthier lifestyles. It is a great way for students to learn about the importance of being healthy for their future! Ketchup Club - (place name(s) here) This committee schedules volunteers to come out and help in the cafeteria during the lunch times. We open up ketchup packs, open up milk cartons, sweep up food, mop spills, you name it…we do it! Legislative Chair Committee - (place name(s) here) One of the purposes of PTA is to “secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth”. Whether it is city, or county government, school board, or the Florida Legislature, PTAs need to be engaged in the process and remain a strong voice for every child. The legislative chair contacts the county council legislative chair or the Florida PTA Legislative Chair for guidance. The chair of the legislative committee also provide the following information to each committee member: • Names, addresses, phone numbers e-mail addresses of your legislative voting district as well as their Tallahassee address. (www.myflorida.com) • The Governor • Commission of Education • Florida PTA Legislative Committee • County Council Legislative Chair • Information and procedures for developing the Florida PTA Action Platform • Information about the Florida PTA State Convention • Information about the Legislative Region Week in Tallahassee • The Action Platform • Budget money for the Florida Legislative Convention and the Legislative Region Week in Tallahassee Lost and Found Committee - (Debi Griffin) There will be items left at school, and some will be marked and some will not be marked. For those items that are not marked, they are to be donated to a local charity or church. For the items that are marked, we try to find the student and give it back to them. Membership Committee - (Richard Sanchez / Carole Rizzo / Sunny Schwentner) We like to motivate people to join our wonderful association. All of the proceeds are given to our establishment to fund special occasions. If we do things correctly, you will be a member! Membership is open to everyone who is interested in the welfare of children and youth. The object is to enroll as many members as possible. Memory Book Committee - (Amy Carnes / Sunny / Bob Messinger) This committee is helping to create a journal of memories of our most important events throughout each year. For example, our first year was full of exciting things such as our Jump Rope for Heart, Dedication Ceremony, Family Fun Nights, and Open House! We like to know that we have pictures to remember our most influential moments. This committee collects pictures from students, parents, and teachers. The committee solicits messages from the teachers and parents for the yearbook. During February and early March the committee meets regularly to lay out and assemble the yearbook pages in order to send it to the publisher by the specified deadline. The committee oversees sale of the yearbook to the students. National Engineers Week - (Jaymes Tran) Engages and motivates the 3rd thru 5th graders to excel in math, science, and engineering education by supporting programs, materials and activities. It is to inspire the future generation of engineers with the limitless career possibilities open to them, and encourage young engineers at the beginning of their educational careers. Newsletter Committee - (Janice with Publisher s/w) These are the people who make sure that you have the information you need. These newsletters are sent home monthly to let you know what is important to you and your child from the PTA. It lists important activities and their dates and keeps you informed of important decisions made by our association. This is definitely something that you will want to read. Parent Education Committee - (place name(s) here) This committee provides resources for parents who would like more information about how they can help or continue to best support their children in academic areas. Parents receive several reports during the year reflecting their child’s progress, have access to websites through the textbook publishers, and receive information on how they can help their child prepare for state testing. This committee will provide parents with informative presentations, question and answer sessions, and hands-on technology and reference material so parents can best meet the academic needs of their children. Red Ribbon Committee - (Marcia Forsythe) This committee is going to help promote health and safety to your child by promoting “Say No To Drugs”. We make sure that your child knows what events will be taking place and what they need to wear or do to help it become successful. It is important to keep our students informed of the dangerous things out there and remind them to stay away from it. Redemption-Box Tops and Labels Committee - (Erin Ramirez) Did you know that for every box top, soup label, and Tyson label you give to us, we get so many cents that are able to go into our savings account? It is true. This committee collects, counts, and sends these items to the appropriate companies so that they return our rightfully collected money to us. It is a great deal! Reflections Committee - (Rene Flores / Ms. Stennet / Tiffany / Sunny) The Reflections Program provides an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through literature, music, photography or visual art. Students enter the Reflections in one of six Arts areas, Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video, or Dance/Choreography. Each student enters in his/her Grade Division. The 2007-2008 theme is “I Can Make a Difference By...”. Here’s how to begin a Reflections Program in your local unit: • OBTAIN an information Packet early from FPTA web site or state office. • CHECK OUT Arts Chair Responsibility and Helpful Hints on the FPTA web site. • SUBMIT a plan of work to your board. • ATTEND any training offered by your council or state PTA. • CHECK that your unit is in good standing (see below). • LOCAL units may not submit entries directly to the Florida PTA. They are submitted to the council. • LOCAL UNITS with NO COUNCIL need to contact their Region Representative. • SET YOUR DEADLINE to meet your council or region deadlines. • FAMILIARIZE yourself with the Criteria and Rules. • PROMOTE participation in the Reflections Program outside of school avenues since the work does not need to be done at school. • PLAN for budget needs by submitting a proposal to your board. • SPONSOR an after school workshop that includes a writer, photographer, musician and artist. Find a sponsor to fund it. • CONTACT potential judges. Ideas can be found in the Arts Chair Responsibility packet on the Florida PTA web site. • CALENDAR a display night of entries. Be sure to include your Literature, Music, Film/Video, and Dance Choreography entries. • CHECK that entries meet the category criteria of size and presentation requirements. • OFFICAL ENTRY FORMS: Only 2007-08 Official Entry forms, on white paper, will be accepted. Do not shrink or copy the form on colored paper. Complete the local unit information section before making copies. A parent and student must each sign the Official entry form and send the original. • CHECK all forms for completeness. This means every applicable blank. • ATTENTION to detail is important since a mistake on an adult’s part may result in disqualification of a student entering the Reflections Program. • DO NOT BE afraid to ask for help. • WHEN IN DOUBT call the Florida PTA Cultural Arts Chair or State Office. Relay for Life Committee - (Patti Davis / Rebecca Kaercher) This committee helps raise awareness among our school and community about cancer. It is a very important time for us to understand what cancer is and how we can help. As a team, we can raise money to contribute to the Relay for Life Association. This money is used to help test and find new cures for cancer. It is a very worthwhile cause. We also set up a station at our region’s annual Relay for Life campground that is held at the Timber Creek High School track and field.
