*** Remember our Google Group at http://groups.google.com/group/tcp-google-earth-internship?hl=en Proposed Projects Oil consumption patterns - Reghina * Global (international data shown by country) http://tinyurl.com/yvte9v shows oil consumption figures from the CIA World Factbook in a color coded and extrusion coded scale for rates of consumption. Problems: No documentation of the color scheme included. Extrusion is so extreme that the imagery is hard to interpret. Potential data sources for custom-made product: * CIA World Factbook (data from 2005 & 2006, most recent available) * Energy Information Administration (more recent data, but tends to focus only on major consumers) http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/oilconsumption.html Created a KML document, working with Jake to add annotations to balloon captions, generate trends graphs, explore other possible presentation methods. Current document used data from the CIA World Factbook (more up-to-date), but might shift to EIA data to have matching time coverage for all locations, and match measures to information in proposed charts. * Regional (U.S. state) data Ken Mankoff provided links to data sources, will explore and visualize. An existing KML is available, but much like the global oil consumption visualization, it has towering 3-D extrusion. Carbon Emissions - Reghina and Jesse * County by county level of annual (2002) carbon emissions in the U.S.A - Jesse See http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Study/AmericanCarbon/ for summary of the Vulcan Project to map DOE information on carbon emissions by Dr. Kevin Gurney at Purdue University. Data on the Vulcan Project site provides state by state and county level information Excel spreadsheets. See the attached file at the bottom of this document for total emissions sorted by county level for the U.S. Current file only shows total amounts, no detailed breakdown by sectors, lacks balloon annotation * Energy Information Administration, http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/carbondioxide.html broken down by sources over 25 years (1980 - 2005) (petroleum, natural gas, coal). EIA gives international information. Draft KML made, has a number of issues to be solved. Solar energy use and potential - Reghina * Global data (CERES surface insolation data from NASA?) * State/Regional data inside the U.S. (Information from EIA) * Possible case study on Boston area and other case study areas as time and scope permits [Another intern (John?) mentioned working on this, will leave that in his hands] |
