Creative Commons and Safe Searching

When searching for images, MS students MUST put to use the safety features that are available in order to steer clear of inappropriate images. There is no way to guarantee that something inappropriate won't pop up.  But you are expected to use the safety features, or click away quickly from images that should not be accessed for schoolwork.  (Our Technology Use Policy at TAS is strict about this rule.)

If you are posting an image on your internet site, you MUST follow the guidelines and give credit immediately next to the image.

Save Time!  Find work with the Creative Commons license!  It grants you permissions for using other people's creative works such as images.  Creative Commons was formed to help creative people share their work without obtaining an expensive license for it.  The creator provides the license (freedom) to use the work, following particular guidelines.  Usually, you can use the work if you promise to give credit in your citation, and you promise not to make money from it.  You MIGHT even be able to "recombine" their work creatively, too, to make a photo montage, a movie, etc.  It's not hard to learn about the different types of permissions that creators grant to other users.

Search safely for Creative Commons images in the following ways:
  • Use CompFight to search inside Flickr's database of images.  Turn the Creative Commons button to ONLY and search with SAFETY button ON as shown in the image below.  At Flickr, find the Creative Commons license information at the lower right of each image's page.

  • Return to the CompFight results thumbnail images each time you want to look at a new image because if you move into Flkr's resources on your own, you risk arriving at inappropriate images or images that do not have the Creative Commons license.

  • You can search in other sources of free images that are listed at the Creative Commons site (scroll to the list halfway down when the window opens.)  Where possible, use advanced search features to turn safety ON.

For example, EveryStockPhoto has an advanced search feature that improves safety:

Other Image Sources:

This is a collection of image sources that help with school work.  The creators have given permission for their use, or else they are "in the public domain" which means they no longer are protected by copyright laws and can be used by anyone.  They may or may not have "safe searching" options.
