MS Africa - Current Events

1) Ask Questions and Define the Task!

Imagine you were hired by a United Nations officer to prepare some diplomats for their trip to Africa.  As representatives of the United Nations, those diplomats want to know how countries work to solve their problems.  They are counting on you for some information to help them prepare for their study trip.

Your task:  Prepare a simple "study sheet" for the diplomats to learn about an issue facing a country in Africa.  There are many choices of issues on this pathfinder's left hand column.  Use the Big 6 Research Process to find articles from the online database Ebsco Student Research Center .  Provide on your study sheet:
  • background causes
  • efforts of people working together for improvements
  • your predictions on the future of this situation and your opinion.
Please prepare a set of focus questions for your research.  You will present a  3 paragraph word-processed presentation to share the answers to your focus questions.  Find the template below as an "attachment" that you can download.  Your presentation will include the following elements:
  • a title that hooks
  • a map and one image to support your information.
  • citations for each of those images provided directly below the image.
  • a works cited list to show your reader the sources you used to answer your focus questions.
Choose a current issue from the left column here

Big6 - 1
With the task above, what are the QUESTIONS you need to form to guide your research?  Your focus questions should be broad, fat focus question based on the project that you need to complete.  Helpful are the FAT questions How.., Which.. and Why...

This project is a collaboration between Humanities Teachers Megan Pettigrew, Peter Stanley, Todd Witherell, Peter Hastorf, and Shawn Jeffrey working with the MS Librarian Margaret Carpenter.  It supports their teaching of 7th graders who are learning information literacy skills for research while they study current events in Africa.
