Dear Track Parents,
There just never seems to be a dull moment in track season!
- Tomorrow is the LAST day to RSVP for the Findlay meet this coming weekend. SEE NOTES BELOW for VERY important information regarding RSVP’s.
- MINI MEET: St. Joe’s track team is hosting a 2nd annual mini meet THIS WEDNESDAY at 5:30pm at Timberstone Jr. High for both cadets and juniors. Events will be the 100meter dash, the 800meter run, high jump and shot put.
- PARENT VOLUNTEERS: Please show up about 5:10pm and see a coach for directions. We will need about 10 parent volunteers to assist with timing, recording times, and field events.
- PICTURE DAY: will be TUESDAY APRIL 28th during regular practice time.
- Saturday April 25th from 11-12:00pm, there will be a sprinters clinic at Olander Park (meet at the open air shelter). We will work on handoffs, starts and other techniques.
- Monday May 4th and May11th: Will be additional regular practice days. These were originally set up for field events only, but this will now be a regular practice days for everyone.
I appreciate everyone’s patience with the Tiffin meet line-up. It was very difficult to make sure which of the 120+ kids on the team were coming, which events they wanted to run, which one’s they would excel at, and then make sure they have all been placed into three events. So I thank you for your understanding as to why the line-up was so late coming out on Saturday.
With that being said, the following changes below are being put into place:
- PRACTICES: ALL ATHLETES are expected to make a minimum of TWO practices a week. Athletes cannot be placed on the “A” team for that weekends meet, if they have only come to one practice. Example: Jane Doe only made one practice this week, at the meet; her relay team suffers a bad handoff because Jane didn’t get to work on handoffs at practice. Result: Jane’s relay team and the entire track team will lose points.
- The deadline to RSVP for a meet is the TUESDAY 9:00pm prior to the meet. Sorry, no exceptions.
- CANCELLATIONS: If a child cannot make a meet, an email or phone call needs to be made to Laura Frye firefrye5@yahoo.com or 419-824-4496 (h), 419-276-2998 (c) NO LATER THAN Thursday by 8am, prior to the meet. After Thursday, if a child is signed up to attend the meet and does not come, it will be considered a “NO SHOW”. It is simply impossible for the coaches to continue to handle last minute changes to the line up. It takes several hours for the coaches to create the line-up.
- NO SHOWS- If a child has a “NO SHOW”, they will NOT be able to participate in any relay events at the next meet they attend. They will only be signed up for individual events. If this happens more than once, they may also be subject to being only signed up for two events instead of three. This is a very serious problem in track, for if one person doesn’t show up, three other athletes may have to sit out their race. For example, if John Doe says he is coming to the meet, but calls the night before the meet to say he won’t make the meet, coaches then must spend significant time re-arranging the line-up. Worse yet, if a child simply doesn’t call, or show up, coaches are then looking for that child at the meet, and the other three kids on John’s relay team DON’T get to run. It is not fair to the athlete that has done all he/she was supposed to do, and not get to run because another athlete didn’t show up, or cancelled at the last minute. Sorry, no exceptions.
Please be sure to mark down the upcoming events on your calendar!
We had a great first meet and hopefully these changes will help us work out some glitches.
As always, feel free to call/email me with any questions or concerns. My goal is to have a safe, fun and successful season and to bring home another CYO CHAMPIONSHIP trophy!

We will be collecting money from now until the end of April to turn in to the Sylvania Relay for Life committee on May 2nd. Last year we raised $6000. If each kid has a goal to raise $100, we can beat last year! With the incredible families we have…I have no doubt we can do it!
- ALL MONEY WILL BE DUE IN BY APRIL 30th. Checks are made payable to the American Cancer Society.
- APRIL 4th - We will need all the parent support we can get. Please pass on the attached flyer of our event to family, friends, co-workers etc. Again, donations can be collected throughout the month of April.
- We will be selling baked goods on April 4th. Please bring in items individually wrapped ready to sell. Contact Lisa Thebes for more information on the bake sale.
- We will need all the extra set of hands, eyes and ears we can get. Contact Joyce Augenbaugh or myself, if you can help with collecting money, being on the coaches team, running a table, or please just show up if you can help with the kids.
- POSTERS: I told any juniors that would like to make posters, to come to practice 15 minutes early next week. We need parents to help supervise this. We would also like to make a large banner if anyone has the time/ability to do that. Long roll of paper/paint is just fine.

Dear Track parents,
We are set and ready to go for another great track season. We have several dedicated coaches, a great deal of parent helpers and about 100 incredible kids!
A few notes to start the season off on the right foot.
FORMS: Medical forms, CYO player contracts and fee's need to be turned in ASAP. (Forms are attached at the bottom of this page). Cost is $40 if no uniform is needed. $61 if a uniform is needed.
UNIFORMS: We will be placing the order on Friday March 13th. If your child does not have one, you will need to see me before end of Thursday's practice. I will have the samples with me at all three practices next week.
PRACTICE: Practice will be at the EAST campus gym. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 6:15- 7:15pm for Cadets (4-6th grade), and 7:15-8:15pm for Juniors (7th and 8th grade). We WILL go outside so please have the kids dress in layers to be able to run both inside and out. We will have a water station. Should your child choose to bring a water bottle, make sure it has their name on it and that they throw it out when empty or take home with them.
WEEKEND PRACTICE: Coach Baugh will be holding Saturday and Sunday fun runs. Saturday runs at 9 a.m. at Olander and Sunday runs at 4:15 p.m. at Wildwood (meet at stables/park HQ). These will begin 3/14. These are optional, but HIGHLY encouraged, especially for the distance runners. These runs serve as great conditioning and are very effective at improving speed and endurance not just for track but for soccer, baseball/softball, football and may other sports. Give it a shot!
FRIENDS: I encourage each kid to try to get a friend to give track a try. Track is a sport that has something for everyone. It is also much more fun to have a friend to do it with!
PARENT HELPERS: THANK YOU to each and every parent that has offered to help the team out with some behind the scene's work. Any parent that would like me to add their name to this list, shoot me a quick email and I will add you to the list. Behind the scene's jobs vary from an hour or so a season to a few hours per week. By having parents help out with these jobs, it will free up the coaches to spend more time working with the kids.
INFORMATION: A parent welcome letter is attached for those that did not get one at sign up's. This has very important information on practice's, meets, as well as other pertinent information. Very handy for families new to track.
UPDATES: Track updates will be posted on our website starting next week. This will include any cancellations, changes and meet information. Please be patient as we switch over the calendar and other items from last year. Our website can also be accessed via the St. Joe's website under sports, as well as through www.sylvania.org .
If you have any questions please let me know!

Our St. Joseph Parish has a lot to be proud of. At the Relay for Life on 6/13/08, our St. Joe's team walked a lap with this sign. We were able to donate nearly $6,000.00 to the American Cancer Society through our "pledging for points" campaign.
Among 25 schools and over 700 participants our 121 member team accumulated 412 points at the championship meet and won 3 championships and 1 runner-up in the 4 divisions. This accomplishment was the best ever in my years as commissioner and I have been blessed to be part of such a program. I will miss everyone next year. Best wishes to all graduates. And for you returning athletes, remember... Your best has yet to come!
