The
discipline of Materials Science involves investigating the
relationships that exist between the structure and properties of materials and the effect thereof on its processing characteristics as
well as its performance. Engineers of all disciplines at one level or the other, deal with materials, addressing problems like selection
of the right material for a particular application; study of the
deterioration of the properties of a material during service and the
manner in which the material influences the economics of a product.
Study of the entire materials cycle from the mining and refining of
raw materials, to production and utilization of finished materials,
and finally to disposal and recycling is of vital importance.A
major percentage of the overall cost of a product can be attributed
to the cost of the material that goes into its design and
fabrication. The emerging trend involves search for various cost
effective solutions to achieve competitiveness by exploring tailor
made materials meeting performance parameters catering to specific
application areas. Tremendous progress has been made in the area of
Materials science and Engineering in the past several years.
Materials like metals, polymers, ceramics, in blend alloy and
composite formulations are already in use for various application
areas like telectronics, biomedical automobile and other general
engineering applications; however several challenges still remain.
COURSE
CONTENTThis I.S.T.E. approved
S.T.T.P. proposes to serve as a refresher course for processing and
performance characteristics of conventional materials as well as
offer exposure to recent smart and special materials used in
Engineering applications, such as nano materials, materials for
aerospace applications, materials used in telectronics and
biodegradable materials. The course also proposes to focus on
environmental issues, keeping in mind the entire cradle to grave life
cycle of products and materials used.
