Sustainable Kirkland

We are the Kirkland, WA chapter of Sustainable Communities ALL Over Puget Sound (SCALLOPS).    We are a new addition to the SCALLOPS community, having just started in September 2008 with a small group.  Since then we've been meeting monthly, and growing rapidly.  We're working a few projects for next year and are looking for ideas and people willing to help!

We meet monthly on the second Thursday night of each month at 6:30 PM, for a potluck dinner, discussion, and planning.  We would love to have you join us - your neighbors and fellow green community members.  If you are deciding to come at the last minute, just phone or email for directions.

To get connected and find out what is going on, the best thing to do is join the discussions on our mailing list at:
groups.google.com/group/sustainable-kirkland

(Or, if you just have a question, email info@sustainablekirkland.org and that will be forwarded to a few group leaders.
)

Web Site Migration!

To make it easier for all Sustainable Kirkland members to update the web site, we're moving to a blog format.
Soon, www.sustainablekirkland.org will be redirected to the blog, but you can check out the new site now at:

Upcoming Events

May Monthly Meeting - Thursday May 14th

We will be hosted by David and Jackie.  Details to be discussed on the mailing list...

Rescheduled Garage Sale - New date is Saturday May 16th

Instead of running our own Garage Sale in April, we've decided to join up with the City of Kirkland community sale at Juanita Beach on Saturday May 16th.

We're sharing two tables, as a group, and in addition to raising some money for Sustainable Kirkland we hope to promote the group.

Members - bring your stuff to sell - don't forget to label it with a price!  We'll plan the details at our May meeting.

The 7 Hills Of Kirkland Cycling Event - Monday May 25th (Memorial Day)

We're helping to "green" this event by staffing three recycling stations in Kirkland's Marina Park.  We'll be ensuring that the correct items go into the proper bins.  This is essential to prevent contamination of the recycling which would lead to all of it just ending up in the trash.

Volunteers are needed for this, starting at 6:30 am and going until 4 pm.  Please contact Doug Burgesser and let him know when you can help out. (dburgesser@gmail.com)  We'll finalize the details at our monthly meeting on the 14th.

January 20th - 7pm - Green Building and Remodeling talk by Jon Alexander

We met at the Wilde Rover in downtown Kirkland on 7pm, January 20, 2009.  Jon Alexander gave a great presentation on green home remodeling and building, covering topics including recycled and non-toxic building materials, how to plan and prepare for a green remodeling project, LEEDS and Built Green certifications and what they cover, and a lot more.

His bio is below.

Jon Alexander is the President of Sunshine Construction LLC and has been a general contractor for the past 25 years. Sunshine Construction LLC is based in Seattle, Washington, and is nationally known for its work specializing in green building and remodeling. His homes have recently won awards in the Seattle Built Green Design competition and the Innovations in Conservation Award from the Resource Venture. The Sensible House, a new construction project, was Built Green’s first home to be awarded 5 Stars.

The Luk Residence was Built Green’s first 5 Star remodel project. His most recent project, the Keller Residence, was recently featured in the New York Times. Jon has given numerous presentations and workshops on green building at local and national conferences. He has long been on the executive committee for the Built Green program of the King-Snohomish Counties Master Builder Association and is one of the founders of the Northwest EcoBuilding Guild.

Jon earned a BA in Environmental Studies from the University of Washington and is a fourth generation construction contractor.

Thanks to the Wild Rover for providing a room, it worked out very well for the presentation and many of us took advantage of the opportunity to get some great food and drinks during and after the talk.

January 8th - Monthly Meeting.

The group was larger again. With three new people, we had a full house!  David Visintainer from the Washington State Bicycle Association visited and talked about the Kirkland Criterium bike race.  We may be able to help out with that event, which happens in early August.   We also discussed preparations for the Green Building & Remodelling Talk on the 20th, and spent some time brainstorming other ideas for 2009.  More details will be available in the meeting minutes.
