Hanover Recycling Committee

The Hanover Recycling Committee has been reconstituted and is now the Sustainable Hanover Committee.  To learn more about what this new group does, please visit this link.

Big Question:  Where do our recyclables go?  Do they end up overseas?  What is the journey our 'stuff' takes?

We hope that over time we will be able to provide a more complete answer to this and other questions.  The story about Stonyfield, below, does provide one perspective on what happens to some recycled materials.

This is a story we distributed a number of years - Please note that Hanover residents can now bring their clean #5 plastic yogurt containers to the Lebanon and Hanover Co-ops on the 2nd Saturday of each month!

Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Containers:

Did you ever wonder about your Stonyfield Farm Yogurt containers? First, the company has made a conscious decision to use #5 Polypropylene plastic, instead of #2 (which is recyclable in Hanover), because they believe that the #5 plastic makes the most sense. Here's why:

  1. #5 plastic is the lightest weight plastic whose thinner walls protect their product and actually use less plastic.
  2. By using #5 plastic instead of #2, Stonyfield Farm prevents the manufacture and disposal of over 100 tons of plastic, resulting in environmental savings from decreased air emissions and resource depletion for the manufacture and distribution of the packaging.
  3. Polypropylene manufacturing uses no chlorine, thus eliminating the hazards of deadly toxin releases during manufacture and incineration, which occur with certain plastics.

If you want to learn more, check out the Stonyfield Farm web site, and select "Earth Actions."

In addition, the next time you are thinking about throwing your Stonyfield Farm yogurt container away, think again. If you return your used and cleaned containers (Stonyfield Farm Take Back Program, Ten Burton Drive, Londonderry, NH 03053), they will not only send you coupons for Stonyfield products, but they will also enter your used containers into an exciting recycling journey. Read on.

Stonyfield has had a five year relationship with Recycline, a company that takes Stonyfield cups and lids and turns them into handles for toothbrushes and razors. If you purchase a Preserve Jr. toothbrush, you will enable your children to participate directly in the preservation of the environment. Not only does Recycline partner with the National Wildlife Federation to support efforts to protect and restore the environment, but it also recycles its used toothbrush handles to create park benches. Now that is a cool story.
