Lesson 1: Introduction

 The aims of this lesson are:
  • to allow everyone in your set to get to know each other;
  • to ensure you are comfortable with the basic operation of our networked and wireless systems;
  • to lay foundations for subsequent work (individual, in pairs and in groups).

Introduction to St Paul's IT facilities and network. This will include: discussion of our ICT AUP (school intranet); accessing the intranet from home (see the intranet homepage, 'Access your H drive from home'); the use and availability of our computing rooms (see here); printing; networked software; web access.

You may prefer to have your school email forwarded to another email account.  Full instructions are here (school intranet).  You'll spend some time now looking at how to do this.

Brainstorming (5 minutes in pairs; 5–10 minutes group feedback): what do you use the net for?  What do you think of as 'computers'?  How would you define 'computer'?

Prep: make a list of what hardware, operating systems (OS) and software you have at home and enter this information, from home, in a Word doc, saving this to your space on the SPS network.  Do the same for your mobile phones and bring your phone in next time.  If you hit a snag with saving to your H drive, save to a memory stick or send the document as an email attachment.
