Science Fair 2008-2009

Use this page to find the science fair forms and information related to due dates for the school fair and regional fair. I am also including a link to a page of science fair ideas. I am thinking of a few and will include some general topic ideas. Of course, you are always welcome to think of your own ideas!

Science Fair update (12/29/08): Students and parents, please remember that the science fair will be occurring upon our return to the normal school schedule. Boards are due January 5th with the science fair judging to follow Jan. 6th and 7th. Judging will occur each evening from 4:30 to 7:30. I will be placing the schedule on line so that you may see which time slot you are set to be judged in. Judging should range from 5-10 minutes and then you may go home. The science fair this year will occur in the cafetorium, which is exciting!

The new forms for the 2009 International Science Fair are now updated. The forms are used as a means of communicating three central ideas to the staff and judges of the science fairs:

  1. Communicating to the fair director(s) that the student planned out his or her project before it was started.
  2. They also communicate that the parents understood what their students are completing in the form of a science project before the project was started.
  3. Lastly, the forms communicate that the student understood the risks involved in the project. If the project involves human subjects, animal subjects, or microbiology, certain forms are required beyond what other students must complete.
Please understand that these forms are of vital importance. Should your project be chosen to move on to the regional science fair (and even the state science fair!), you will be asked to have these forms properly completed. As a matter of fact, should the forms be completed incorrectly, the student could be disqualified from participating in the fair at all. I as your teacher do not want this to happen! I watched a lot of heartache and nervousness occur at the state science fair concerning incorrectly completed forms. We will go over what forms are required and how to complete them in detail starting in August. Below you will find the four forms that are required of EVERY STUDENT.

FORMS REQUIRED BY ALL STUDENTS:
  • Form 1 Checklist for Adult Sponsor  (The sponsor can be a parent.)
  • Form 1A Student Checklist
  • Research Plan  (This form details what is expected to be in a research plan. The student's actual research plan will be on a separate page(s).)
  • Form 1B Approval Form  (This communicates that the parent(s) and student(s) understand the risks (if any) of the project.)
  • Also found in this link are Form 1 C Regulated Research Institutional/ Industrial Setting Form; Form 2 Qualified Scientist Form; Form 3 Risk Assessment Form; Form 4 Human Subjects Form; Form 5A Vertebrate Animal Form; Form 6A Potentially Hazardous Biological Agents Risk Assessment Form; Form 6B Human and Vertebrate Animal Tissue Form; and Form 7 Continuation Projects Form.  (These forms will be used on a project by project basis. Not all students will need them, but they are there just in case. For example, if you are working with volcanoes, you will most likely not need to complete Form 4. However, if you are working with human subjects, obviously you will need Form 4.)

I am also including the link to the Student Handbook 2009. The handbook is very important, as most of the details about the research paper and how to complete a science fair project are included in the length of the handbook. Please read it very closely and use it as your guide when thinking about setting up your own successful project.

I am also adding the link to a program that helps you decide if your project needs IRB/ SRC approval. For those of you who have never done a project before, a science fair project usually needs IRB/ SRC approval if human or animal subjects are used in the course of experimentation. Additionally, a project also most likely will need some of the latter forms from above completed as well if it has human/ animal subjects.

For those of you deciding if you want to work on a science fair project over this summer, please e-mail me. I am not sure if anyone is checking my site over the summer, but here is my e-mail should you need it: brennanj@stpaulcatholic.net
