Why do we have Sacred Music concerts in Saint Paul Catholic Church?

“Praise The Lord with loud singing, O my soul; praise Him with organs and trumpets… even the stones themselves will praise to The Lord.”

Our Lord, Jesus, loved music and often sang hymns of praise and thanksgiving to Our Father in Heaven with his disciples.  We continue this expression of love in the centuries-old tradition of sacred music.  We offer our best to God with our psalms and hymns of praise.  It is written in the Bible that we should let our light so shine to demonstrate our great love and thankfulness to God.  As Jesus taught, “If you love me, then feed my lambs.” “Go out into the world and share the Good News of God’s love for us!”  We thus invite all into our church to demonstrate that same love.

"The musical tradition of the universal church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art." --Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, chapter VI, 112. Vatican Council II.

For over two thousand years, the Roman Catholic Church has been the primary patron of the arts for western civilization as it seeks to expose and develop this treasure of inestimable value.  Throughout history, the Catholic Church has promoted great architecture, religious art and the finest sacred music to inspire the hearts and to educate the minds of all who see and hear.   In particular,  sacred music carries us beyond our emotions and standard life experience into a transcendent experience of the divine.

As in all the great churches and cathedrals of the world, we at Saint Paul Catholic Church continue to share in the tradition of the church by being a patron of the arts through  promoting great architecture, religious art and the finest sacred music .  We, as Catholic Christians, wish to share the fullness of our faith and traditions with anyone willing to inquire.   As we open our doors for the finest concerts of sacred music, many people who would otherwise never enter our church will come to visit.  It is through such musical outreach that we have the unique opportunity to share our faith and personally demonstrate our devotion. (See Concerts in Churches.)

Many unfortunate impressions of Catholicism, so prevalent in our area can be quickly rectified by these encounters.  Quite often someone may visit our church because of the great sacred music offered and may subsequently become one of our church leaders as converts.    Sacred music is a great and powerful gift for the good of all.  We choose to share this gift for the praise of God and for the inspiration of all.

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16
