Major Lazer and Asher Roth, two new artists for whom 2009 has been a break-out year, have both received nominations for this year's MTV Video Music Awards!
The Ferry Gouw-directed video for Major Lazer's "Hold the Line", which broke away from standard music video fare by drawing inspiriation from Saturday-morning cartoons and action figure ads, received a VMA nod in the Breakthrough Artist category. Master-minded by Grammy-nominated producers Diplo and Switch, Major Lazer's debut LP, Guns Don't Kill People...Lazers Do, is out now on Downtown Records.
Asher Roth's "I Love College", which launched the 23-year-old Pennysylvanian into the national spotlight, has received two nominations- Best Hip-Hop Video and Best New Artist. In both categories, Roth keeps good company alongside fellow nominees Jay Z, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, and Eminem. In the midst of the "Great Hangover Tour", Asher Roth has also received Teen Choice Award nominations for Choice Breakout Artist and Choice Rap/Hip-Hop Track categories.

Arguably one of the more formidable DJ/producer collaborations in recent memory, the creation of Duck Sauce by world renowned DJs A-Trak and Armand Van Helden promises to deliver what could easily be the the most refreshing dance music in years. Individually, the New York-based duo are among the reigning names in dance music, past and present; earlier this year, they teamed up to produce tracks destined to become instant anthems. Having found it easy to work together through similar musical backgrounds and viewpoints, namely creating house music through a hip-hop filter, Duck Sauce was born.
Reviving classic mid-90s formulas that became Armand Van Helden's signature sound along with the filtered French Touch era of labels Roulé and Crydamoure, Duck Sauce reinvents effortless disco house with a sonic quality and aplomb suited for the DJs sets of today. Over a span of 5 days A-Trak and Van Helden mined their disco loops with the prime objective of "intentionally making party monsters." The result was several overwhelming, feel-good tracks, two of which became the massive summer sing-along "aNYway" and "You're Nasty", a high-energy dance floor bomb built around a quirky half-bar sample and a screeching keyboard. Quickly turning into one of the most anticipated releases of 2009, "aNYway" has been receiving tremendous support from DJs worldwide, including airplay from Radio 1 (Zane Lowe, Annie Mac) and Power 106 (DJ Reflex). The much lauded superstar in the making, Kid Sister, is releasing her long-anticipated debut album, Ultraviolet, on October 6th on Downtown Records. When Kid Sister (aka Melisa Young) turned in her album, originally titled Dream Date, in September of 2008, she pulled a daring move and asked Downtown to hold off on releasing it.
"There were a few things about the album that irked me...the album wasn't cohesive", Young told Pitchfork in an interview earlier this year. Downtown allowed her some time to make the album what she wanted, and she went back to work with executive producer A-Trak and the rest of the creative team behind Fool's Gold. The result is the stunning Ultraviolet. The album is a landmark, merging electronic music and club rap in ways that have never been done before. The album includes production by some of the most sought after, cutting edge producers working today (including A-Trak, Rusko, Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso, Sinden, XXXChange, Brian Kennedy, Herve, Yuksek and DJ Gant-Man) who all seem to have recognized the talent and star power that also motivated Kanye West to collaborate with her on 2007's Pro Nails single, helping in part to create the deafening buzz that surrounds her now. The album is 12 songs deep, with each track being mixed seamlessly into the next, creating a continuous mix of songs that contain an innovative approach to their perfectly honed pop sensibilities. The final result of Kid Sister's signature effervescent rapping style with these innovative producers will cement her debut release as one of the most talked about this year.

MGMT HEADLINE TREASURE ISLAND MUSIC FESTIVAL
MGMT are set to headline the opening night of Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco, CA on Saturday October 17, 2009. Now in it’s 3rd year, Treasure Island Music Festival has become the most anticipated boutique festival tour on the West Coast. Also on the bill for this date are MSTRKRFT, Girl Talk, Passion Pit, The Streets and more. Headlining the festival on Sunday are The Flaming Lips, with openers The Decemberists, Yo La Tengo, Grizzly Bear and more. Canadian dancefloor-monsters Thunderheist are coming back to America for a string of their notorious live shows to promote their recent debut self-titled album (on Big Dada). EYEDEA & ABILITIES RELEASE FIRST ALBUM IN FIVE YEARS
RHYMESAYERS ENTERTAINMENT TO RELEASE BY THE THROAT ON JULY 21
A duo thoroughly steeped in hip-hop accolades, the Minnesota-based duo Eyedea and Abilities have returned with their brand new album By The Throat, out July 21st on Rhymesayers Entertainment. Their first album since the breakout 2004 release E&A, By The Throat's songs range from intensely personal topics to the more esoteric (quantum mechanics). The end result is leaps and bounds beyond what MC Eyedea is perhaps best known for, his prowess as a battle rapper (winner of HBO's Blaze Battle, Scribble Jam and several others). DJ Abilities, also a well-known battle vet and contributor to El-P's now-classic Fantastic Damage, adds heavily to the sonic soundscape of this album, which advances beyond boom-bap hip-hop into rock-fueled guitar riffs, gritty production and melodic songwriting.
Eyedea and Abilities were instrumental in the wave of independent hip-hop that includes Atmosphere, El-P, Aesop Rock, Living Legends and several other seminal acts. By The Throat is their most progressive and refined effort to date.
E & A will be performing at Rhymesayers' Soundset '09 on May 24th and will be headlining a tour in the fall of 2009. They have also been confirmed for the following Rock the Bells dates this summer.

Grammy-nominated DJ & producer Diplo was first recognized as one half of the genre-defining DJ Crew Hollertronix and the mastermind behind his now legendary mixtape with M.I.A., Piracy Funds Terrorism. In 2006, Mad Decent opened its doors as a vehicle to break new artists discovered by Diplo from his travels around the world. From Brazil to Baltimore, artists such as Bonde do Role, Blaqstarr, Rye Rye, Crookers, Boy 8 Bit and South Rakkas Crew have come into the dance/hip-hop/electronic scene under Diplo's watchful eye. Becoming a household name amongst the bloggerati and musical tastemakers, Diplo has created an environment with Mad Decent that supercedes the common role of record label and has become a cultural curator. Mad Decent now joins forces with one of todays most illustrious and lauded labels, Downtown Records, to bring even more great music into the hands and hearts of fans all over the world.

LADY SOVEREIGN ANNOUNCES IN-STORE APPEARANCES AND OFFICIAL RELEASE PARTY FOR JIGSAW!
JIGSAW OUT APRIL 7th ON MIDGET RECORDS
Following the release of her anticipated sophomore album Jigsaw (April 7th on Midget Records), Lady Sovereign will take to the US for a series of in-store signings at select Hot Topic stores and a performance at her official album release party presented by GBH and Tribeca Grand.
These limited appearances by the vibrant rapper will be followed by a full North American tour in May, backed by DJ Annalyze and Ryan Simmonds. If her recent stellar performances at SXSW are anything to go by (read here and here), Lady Sovereign is back and in prime form, ready to slay American audiences with her energetic live show and new album.

The list of female performers that can do all of that is even smaller and Amanda Blank is about to rise to the top of that list with her debut album, I Love You. Many are familiar with Amanda as the fiery vixen appearing alongside crowd and critical darlings Spankrock, and as part of the Philly-based pop group Sweatheart. Enlisting the help of uber-produers Diplo, Switch and XXXChange, Amanda Blank has made a record that is light years ahead of what anyone could've expected based on her guest appearances thus far. NEW ALBUM FROM THE LATE HIP-HOP LEGEND J DILLA COMING THIS SUMMER
EXECUTIVE PRODUCED BY DILLA'S MOM, MS. YANCEY, AKA "MA DUKES"
By now, most everyone is familiar with the story of musical legend J Dilla. The quiet, prolific producer collaborated with everyone from Eryka Badu to Common to Janet Jackson to Prince. Dilla was just beginning to capitalize on his cult status when he sadly passed at age 32 due to Lupus-related complications. Jay Stay Paid, is a 25 track collection of unreleased Dilla beats mixed and arranged by Pete Rock. While mostly instrumental, "J$P" also offers a few guests vocals from artists that Dilla worked with or admired including Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, and M.O.P.
Curtailing any notion of jumping on some sort of Dilla bangwagon, Jay Stay Paid was executive produced by Dilla's mother Maureen Yancey (aka Ma Dukes) along with the musical supervision of Dilla's only real musical idol, Pete Rock. "It wasn't rushed and it wasn't haphazard," explains Ms Yancey. "This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep, and some stuff pulled from old floppy disks & DATs. Its mind blowing...this is like the missing links to Dilla's legacy."
The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock as the program director. With regards to Pete's involvement, Ms. Yancey gets very excited, "Dilla wanted to pattern himself behind Pete. His dream was to become as close as possible to what Pete stood for. Pete meant everything to him. Dilla, would have been flabbergasted!" Pete's sentiments were the same toward Dilla, "Dude was amazing. He just kinda came outta nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be here with us, but it's all good we're going to keep his music alive and well."
In the late 80s, Dilla founded the seminal rap group Slum Village and put Detroit hip-hop on the map, while the 90's saw him playing a major role in the production team The Ummah with Q-Tip and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing extensive work on Tribe Called Quest's last two albums.
Jay Stay Paid will be released on June 2nd on Nature Sounds.
