It is not the greatest, but it is a good place to look when you are having trouble.

What should you do if you "don't get it"?

  • Try to figure out what you don't get. Odds are that it is one concept that is holding you up.
  • Read the directions. When a student comes to me for help, that is typically my first response. My second response is to read the directions to them. This clears up misunderstandings about 75% of the time.
  • Look in the book for examples or directions. The book often has very explicit directions in it on how to do the work. (This was the case with the stem and leaf plots.) At the very least, there are examples. Look within the section that the homework come from.
  • Call a friend.
  • Lastly: Press On. It is not a bad thing to struggle. If you are not struggling sometimes, I am not pushing you hard enough.

Homework:

Finish 4.1 A-F on page 50
Questions 1 and 2 on page 55.

Don't resort to invert and multiply. You can do this in your head. You just need to think about the problems.

An algorithm is a problem solving method. For example, long division is one of several algorithms for solving division problems.

Note the following table. Each recipe has 20 bags of chocolate chips. Not that if you double the number of chips per batch, you cut the number of batches in half. If you increase the number of chips 4x you can only make 1/4 the number of batches.

Recipe    Bags of Chips per Batch
 Batches
 Bob's 1     20
 Claire's    2 10
 Hector's 4 5
 Justine's6 3 1/3

You might want to draw pictures to represent the cheese blocks. That helps some people a great deal.

Homework:

What is 14 divided by 3/4?
In other words:
How many times does 3/4 go into 14?
