St. Mary's Physical Education and Health program is designed to accomplish many individual and team goals. Our program is designed so that we either meet or exceed the Illinois State Standards. Through activity and classroom time, the value of a healthy lifestyle is stressed. We differentiate between Physical Education and athletics. We operate under the assumption that everyone is good at something, and no one is good at everything. This helps create an environment where students are comfortable to try new skills. It creates a safe and nurturing environment that allows the student to reach his/her full potential.
It is my personal goal to help students develop self-confidence and life long skills that will allow them to remain active through adulthood. We start with the fundamentals and build from there. I try to expose them to a diverse set of games, sports, activities, and social challenges. The idea here is to prepare them with fundamentals so they will feel comfortable taking part in opportunities that will lead to a healthier lifestyle. Studies are showing that there is improved comprehension when students have PE before reading. While we have always thought this, new technology is proving it to be true. Increased blood flow is believed to be a factor. With that in mind, much effort is put into supporting other teachers through cross curricular activities. |
