We have now completed one quarter in Math 1a and, after some careful re-evaluting of the curriculum, I feel as though we need to change some things to best meet the needs of all students in the class. I'm in the process of evaulating some Math workbooks that I would like to adopt for the remainder of the school year. I would also like to change the layout of the class.
For the most part, all students in Math 1a have different areas of strength as well as weakness. For this reason, I would like to move to a more one-on-one curriculum. Students would strive for Quality instead of simply completeness. Each student will progress through the information at his/her own pace (though goals will be in place for each). As each student completes a lesson, he/she will sit with me to go over their work. We will talk through their answers and their process. Once a lesson has been mastered, we will discuss the next lesson/concept and they will be on their own to complete it. We will repeat this process daily.
The only drawback I forsee as of now in using a curriculum of this format is grades. Because students will all likely be in different places at a time, it will be difficult to keep information up to date in the Gradebook. My goal is to keep paper grades (old fashioned gradebook) and enter grades weekly. Students will also be given a participation grade daily based upon their use of classtime.
There will be a handout sent home toward the end of this week/beginning of next week to outline the changes. Please contact me with any questions you or your child may have in regards to this change.
Sincerely,
Stef Pool
