Science 5

All of my science classes begin the year learning about science safety. 5th Grade Science students then learn how to use various science equipment safely and properly. We will use a graduated cylinder, thermometer, pan balance, calipers and rulers. They will construct a "mathematical art-o-fact" following prescribed measurements. We have 15 new microscopes purchased with grant money. We will be learning to correctly use them.
We will conduct 2 lake studies this year to learn about how to test for water quality. I will be applying for grant money for additional materials for these trips. We will study about cells, invertebrates(macros, protists, earthworms, and snails), and non-green plants(yeast, molds and fungi). We will learn about agriculture during our World Food Unit. We will also be learning about magnetism and electricity. Our trip to the Challenger Learning Center will be next year since this is an every other year event. They will also be participating in a science fair this spring. We will write a research paper second quarter and do an at home experiment third quarter. Fair will be March 15, 2010. More details coming soon!

This is a copy of my safety contract. Students must pass a safety test and have a signed copy of this contract on file before they can parrticipate in science activities.
