Science 8

Curriculum includes:
http://www.bradfitzpatrick.com/stock_illustration/cartoon-technology-clipart/cartoon_science_clipart.htm    Properties of Solids, Liquids, Gases and Colloids
                                Periodic Table of the Elements
                                Simple Chemistry
                                Forensics using Chemistry

We will spend a lot of time learning about the properties of liquids. We will work with siphons and floating. We will float paperclips and pins and see the effects of surface tension. We will construct boats out of clay and aluminum foil. We will sing about what 3 "things" make objects float! Boat projects will be built at home then presented to the class.
We will learn about Archimedes, buoyancy and weight displacement. We will observe 2 stainless steel spheres and work on computing their volume, mass and density.
Next will be a study of the periodic table of elements and some simple chemistry. This will include our study of colloids. We will put on a chemistry show for our 4th graders. We will "adopt" an element and research its properties. We will use chemistry to solve some forensics problems.
We will end the year with some work with solids. We will try to solve various building problems using a variety of materials. We will study the properties of bubbles and gases.
There wil be a science fair this year. We will write research papers second quarter and do an at home project third quarter. The Judging will be Monday, March 15, 2010. More details will be coming home soon.
