SAXON FOUNDATION
GRANT AND WISH LIST APPLICATION COVER SHEET/INSTRUCTIONS
The South Salem Saxon’s Education Foundation (Saxon Foundation), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, enhances the quality of education at South Salem High School by raising funds to support South’s tradition of academic excellence - -including teacher professional development, the purchase of special supplies and equipment and special projects contributing to academic achievement.
The Saxon Foundation welcomes grant and wish list requests from all members of the South Salem High School community. The second page of these instructions provides an informal outline of Foundation considerations in awarding grants.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Applications can be emailed to you as a Word document by Jim Aiken jda97302@live.com and prepared on computer for electronic transmission. Please use the Saxon Foundation Grant Form. This Form can also be copied and pasted from the Foundation web site http://sites.google.com/a/southsaxons.com/foundation// . Please e-mail the completed form as a “Word” document attachment melaniesfreeman@gmail.com. If there is supporting documentation to your application that cannot be sent as an electronic attachment to your application, your application should so indicate and the documentation placed in the Saxon Foundation mail in South High’s office.
During each grant award cycle, the Foundation will announce an application deadline, while the Foundation will consider grants submitted at any time, it is to the applicant’s advantage to submit the application prior to the deadline to ensure that there is an opportunity for consideration before award funds are depleted.
Note: The Saxon Foundation Encourages grant applicants to apply for grants well before the funds are needed. Many projects require special fundraising. Also, as we will keep unfilled grants open unless you are otherwise notified, please let us know if you have filled the need through other means.

CONSIDERATIONS IN AWARDING GRANTS
This page informally outlines some considerations the Saxon Foundation Board looks at in awarding grants (how we view our mission):
A. WE LOOK FOR PROJECTS THAT:
1. Benefit a significant number of students in relation to its cost.
2. Have no (or less than adequate) funding available through other sources.
3. Encourage and/or recognize academic or teacher achievement at any academic level of South.
4. Involve in-classroom improvements, opportunities, or equipment at the High School or take advantage of a rare learning opportunity.
5. Are one-time purchases or start-up funding for projects and activities that can then find other funding . . . not a regular budget item for any project or program,
6. Are a special educational opportunity (possibly transportation and event cost . . . but not food).
7. Have a clear connection to enhance student learning at South, which can also include: in-class music training, some physical education related activities, culinary training, drafting and technical related activities.
B. NOT WITHIN OUR MISSION:
1. Projects that are primarily part of school administration.
2. Paying for items or costs that are normally part of the school or district budget (i.e. Textbooks, Projecters)
3. Post-graduation scholarships or supporting activities of other educational institutions.
4. “Outings” that have no clear connection enhancing student learning at South or food on trips.
C. ALSO:
1. We try to make what we have go as far as possible.
2. Any member of the South Community, not just teachers, can apply for grants.
3. We try to be flexible and are sometimes able to help find funding or assistance even if a project is not within Foundation’s mission or budget.
4. We are sometimes able to help with opportunities that arise on short notice and need a quick response.
5. We are willing to advocate for the School District to look at projects that may be beyond our budget, but are within our mission.
6. Technology purchases need school approval as supportable and within school guidelines.
7. We will try to help you find other sources if we can't help you directly! |
