General Course Info
The three main areas of science that will be covered are Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. Gathering and evaluating information, looking for patterns, devising and testing possible explanations and conducting scientific inquiries will be included. The scientific method will be incorporated throughout the program. A strong focus on hands-on science and experimentation will be utilized, including developing and implementing independent investigations. Grade specific standards will be fully integrated into the program. Areas of study will include, but are not limited to, scientific classification, an overview of major animal groups, ecology and environment, earth science, electricity, magnetism, and weather and climate. Each student will be required to complete a Science Fair Project.
Classroom Rules
The classroom has three rules. Be safe, be respectful, be responsible. We will be discussing what these rules mean for our community the first week of school.
Discipline Procedure
The policy set forth in the Student Handbook will be followed. DPS points will be awarded as necessary. The classroom has a marble jar. Once the marble jar is full the students will receive an extra award. The students will receive marbles when they exhibit good behavior or are on-task. Each student will also receive points for good behavior. Once the student has received 30 points they may choose a prize from the good behavior box. For problems in class, the student will be issued a warning. If the behavior continues he/she will a time out, followed by a parent call. If the behavior still continues, the student will be referred to the administration.

Classwork and Homework assignments are worth 80% of the student's grade. Assessments, including but not limited to quizzes, tests, and major projects, are worth 20% of the student's grade.
Make-up Procedure
Students are responsible for getting and turning in make-up assignments. If the student fails to do so in a timely manner, he or she will not receive credit. Make–up tests, quizzes, and labs can be done during after school. If students choose not to do their homework or any assignment they will receive a grade of “0”. If a student is having trouble with an assignment, it is their responsibility to arrange a meeting with the teacher.
1. After an absence it is the student’s responsibility to contact with the teacher to receive any instruction or paperwork that was missed.
2. Students can contact the teacher during their absence to obtain any work that they will be missing during their absence
3. If a student misses a test he/she must come in within 3 days to make it up.
Homework
Homework will be assigned to improve understanding of topics. Homework will be written on the assignment board daily. Students will also receive a Homework Packet each Monday. Students need to complete any work that is awarded. Any changes or additions to the Homework Packet will be written on the Assignment Board. It is the students' responsibility to record their homework every day. Each student has a homework folder. Please check the homework folder daily. Remove the items in the “Leave at Home” pouch. Have the student complete or sign the items in the “Return to School” pouch. Please sign your student's Student Planner daily.
SSA’s homework policy:
No late homework assignments will be accepted. If you do not have your homework at the beginning of class on the due date, you will receive a zero. However, no DPS points will be assigned to late or missing assignments.
In terms of extended projects and papers, the grade will drop 5% for each day the assignment is late. One Day Late – highest grade possible is a 95, Two Days Late – highest grade possible is a 90, etc. Late projects and papers will not be accepted after 5 days.
Teachers will inform students when a project or paper that follows this policy is being assigned and will remind them of the grading policy.
II. No Name Policy
Student papers turned in without names will be put in the ‘’NO NAME’’ box and must be named by the student and turned in again. The student will not receive full credit ( -5% )on any assignment that was missing their name, date, or period.
