General Course Info Language Arts Course Description and Goals All aspects of language arts will be covered to include reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The writing curriculum will emphasize the 6-traits of writing: voice, sentence fluency, organization, ideas, word choice, and conventions. Students will practice various forms of writing, including personal narrative, exposition, letters, newspaper articles, plays, poetry, short stories, biographies, directions, realistic and fantasy stories. The principles and applications of correct grammar will be incorporated into writing exercises. Students will learn basic keyboarding skills and program operations for word processing as a prerequisite for Middle School Computer classes. I hope to involve students and parents in the writing process through journals that will be going home every week. The students will have a chance to write to the parent and then you will have a chance to respond. After the first few weeks of the school year, I will be inviting Mystery Readers to come to the class every week. The Mystery Readers will of course be a surprise, but include parents, grandparents, siblings, or other special friends. The Mystery reader will have a chance to read to the whole class. More information will be given after the first few weeks of school.
The students will also be required to complete a Book Report at least once a Unit.
The students will have weekly spelling/vocabulary tests and reading comprehension tests. They will be completing assignments in their reading, spelling, and grammar workbooks. Any assignments not finished in class will be homework, and I will expect it the next morning. Additionally, any Projects will have a summary sheet explaining the assignment and a rubric explaining the grading points.
Textbook The textbook and workbooks we are using are the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill 3rd grade set. We will also be reading several chapter books. The students will be issued these books and they are responsible for keeping them in good condition, if they are lost or destroyed, the student will be charged the replacement cost. Classroom Rules The classroom has three rules. Be safe, be respectful, be responsible. We will be discussing what these rules mean for our community the first week of school. Discipline Procedure The policy set forth in the Student Handbook will be followed. DPS points will be awarded as necessary. The classroom has a marble jar. Once the marble jar is full the students will receive an extra award. The students will receive marbles when they exhibit good behavior or are on-task. Each student will also receive points for good behavior. Once the student has received 20 points they may choose a prize from the good behavior box. For problems in class, the student will be issued a warning. If the behavior continues he/she will a time out, followed by a parent call. If the behavior still continues, the student will be referred to the administration. GradingGrading System 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 65-69% D Below 65 F
The points received for a grading period will be divided by the points possible to calculate the letter grade. Make–up tests, quizzes, and labs can be done during after school. If students choose not to do their homework or any assignment, they will receive a grade of “0”. If a student is having trouble with an assignment, it is their responsibility to arrange a meeting with the teacher. 1. After an absence it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher to receive any instruction or paperwork that was missed. 2. Students can contact the teacher during their absence to obtain any work that they will be missing during their absence 3. If a student misses a test, he/she must come in within 3 days to make it up. Homework Homework will be assigned to improve understanding of topics. Homework will be written on the assignment board daily. Students will also receive a Homework Packet each Monday. Students need to complete any work that is awarded. Any changes or additions to the Homework Packet will be written on the Assignment Board.
