Welcome to Music Class!  I am looking forward to getting to know and working with each one of you this year!  Whether you have had any music experience or not, you are going to learn a lot about music this year, and of course, we will have fun!

Course Description:

This course will teach students an overall appreciation for Western Music, encompassing the subjects of music theory, music history, and practical applications/practice of these.  Music theory instruction will include the reading and writing of notation, such as treble and bass clefs, key signatures, and time signatures.  Students will learn the basis of rhythm through instruments or clapping, with counting technique.  Ear training will also be initiated.  In Music History, students will understand the foundations for today’s music by tracing the steps of pre-Bach and beyond.  Special days will also be designated to touch on exploration of non-Western music.

Classroom Rules:

The school-wide rules covered in the student handbook will also be used in music class.  There are also a few more rules specific for music class:

  1. Listen to and follow all directions.
  2. Respect each other – We are all equal!
  3. Come to class with an open mind.
  4. Bring a pencil and notebook to class everyday.
  5. Participate and cooperate in all activities.
  6. Have fun!

90-100% - A

80-89% - B

70-79% - C

65-69% - D

64% or lower – F

Participation (10 points a day: being in class, following rules): 40%

Homework/in-class assignments: 20%

*The final, whether project or performance, is not optional.  Failure to complete this will result in an automatic drop of two letter grades.

Consequences:

When classroom and/or school rules are broken, these are the following steps I will take:

1. Verbal Warning

2. Each time after the warning, I will take away one point from the days 10 participation points.

3. When a student goes to 6 points, the next step is a zero for the day, as well as parent contact.

4. Office referral

**DPS points can be given at any time.

Expectations:

I expect each student to come to class ready to learn and to put forth his or her best effort each day.  That is the key to success in this class!

Late Work/Make-Up Work:

Late work will not be accepted.  If absent when an assignment was due, bring it to me the day you return to school, whether you have class or not.

If you are absent when the homework was given, please see me as soon as possible for your make-up work.  This is the student’s responsibility!
