ART SYLLABUS

Grades k-6

Mrs. Schutsky

Welcome to Art!  I hope you are ready for an exciting art experience.  This year you will be introduced to a variety of art media, artists and new ideas.  In class you will learn about the elements and principles of design, learn to use different art materials and study about the art of the past and present.  Your newly acquired art skills will allow you to express ideas in artworks of your own.  You will become literate (able to read) in art.

Once I have finished discussing this syllabus in class, please share this syllabus with your parents. Then sign the Syllabus Acknowledgement Form and return it.  Thank you!

ABOUT MRS. SCHUTSKY:

I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Arizona.  I have been creating art since I was a child.  For the past 2 years I have been involved in the Downtown Phoenix art scene, selling artwork, clothes and accessories.  I have an interest in almost all art mediums including; photography, painting, sculpture and silk screening.  I also like to sew, a lot.  I believe we are all artists at heart.  The trick is finding out which type of art you like and finding out how you can excel in it!

GRADES: Keep EVERYTHING!!!

-If there is ever an error in your grades, you must have proof of your work to correct these errors!

I will be grading assignments after each class and you will be taking them home the following class.  I would like you to keep most of your work at school on display, but if you take it home- remember to keep it safe in case you have a grade error.

Grades will be based on:

Participation

Skill (or attempt at improving skill)

& Creative thinking

ART HISTORY

Most studio assignments you will learn about a famous artist, time period, and/or art movement.  This is part of the curriculum and it’s very important to helping you understand why artists do what they do.  The goal is to provide you with an overview of art from prehistoric times to the present.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS IN ART CLASS

1.             Follow Directions

2.            Be Respectful

3.            Be ready to learn about ART!

WHY ARE YOU ASKED TO WORK QUIETLY?

When you are working on studio projects in Art class I ask you not to visit.  Quietness allows you and your classmates a chance to focus on the task at hand.  It is a courtesy in respecting yourself and others.  It allows you to engage in “right brain mode” which is an integral part of the artistic process.  Sometimes (non verbal) music will be played in the background to help stimulate creativity (this does not mean you can bring your own music).

ATTENDANCE

If you are absent you can not make up the work during class time.  We only meet once a week, so if you miss something you can come to a tutoring session and make up the work or make it up at home.

MAKE-UP POLICY

We follow the make-up policy in the School Student Handbook.

If you have a concern about making up work, please email or talk with me.
