CHC Information

Since our students spend 3 years off-campus working in community health centers, we have formed alliances with other AMSA chapters to participate in their programming, encourage community involvement, and to meet other medical students working and learning in the areas in which we live.  We are very happy to have SOMA student representatives for each site.

Here is a list of AMSA representatives and some information about them, and you can find the local affilitated chapters at the bottom of this site!

Alabama- John Porter, OMS-II
My name is John Porter, and I am a second year SOMA student at the Troy, AL CHC.  My educational background is varied as I have a degree in International Business, 1999-2003; and in recent years, 2005-2008, I completed pre-medical, post-baccalaureate work.

I have been actively involved in medical missions and health care for quite some time.  I took a job as a student in Memphis, TN at the Elvis Presley shock trauma unit, (Level 1) during the summer of 2000.  I worked there seasonally until 2003.  I have visited Mexico on seven different occasions to participate in volunteer work.  In 2001 I went to Cordoba, Veracruz Mexico where I spent three months learning Spanish and participating in medical missions.  These missions included:  otolaryngology, gynecology, and ophthalmology.  I was able to witness and participate in some amazing procedures.  I returned in May of 2008 to Cordoba and interpret in one of the hospitals.

Since coming to A. T. Still I have joined several organizations and taken part in multiple volunteer projects.  I spearheaded the formation of a bioethics club of which I am now president.  I have also been very involved in the ACOFP/SA, sitting on multiple committees and helping out with general needs.  Recently I have been given the opportunity to be an AMSA representative.  I look forward to serving as SOMA’s representative to the Troy area.

Beaufort- Rachel Maupin, OMS-II
My name is Rachel Maupin and I am the AMSA representative for the South Carolina CHC.  I grew up in St. Louis and graduated cum laude from the University of San Diego in 2008 with a Bachelor of Business Administration.  Despite my degree in business, I have always had my eye set on medical school and am especially interested in general surgery. I chose South Carolina because of its one of a kind southern culture, its inviting hospital staff, and the opportunity to work with Gullah people (wiki them!).  Added bonuses are the beautiful weather, incredible food, and fabulous beaches!! Feel free to email me with any questions!
