Presidential Candidate: Carlann Defontes

Hello 2011 and 2012 ACOFP members,

This year as ATSU SOMA has been a year of growth and challenges for all of us.  As the 1^st year representative for ACOFP I have had the opportunity to experience this with our ACOFP Chapter as well.  Our unique curriculum and program afford us the opportunity to have a most amazing educational journey.  Our one year in Mesa, prepares us for the next leg at our CHCs.  This short stent on Campus however, has brought with it unique challenges in creating continuity and development in all of our interest groups and chapters.  I am excited and honored to be a part of the genesis of our ACOFP chapter.

In the first few months of my involvement, I was approached to help put together a National Primary Care Week activity for our campus.  At the same time, I was talking with the Special Olympics about activities for our chapter.  The networking and future opportunities that unfolded were almost overwhelming.  I needed more help.  Well, we got it. With the culmination of the wisdom of 2011 Class officers, several Deans and our National Student President we have restructures our special chapter to meet the needs of our evolving program.  We have amazing events, speakers, and opportunities lined up for the remainder of our class year already. I am eternally grateful to everyone involved for their willingness to assist me in this endeavor.

I believe Family Practice is the foundation of quality health care. My 2012 classmates know (and are probably weary of hearing about) my passion for rural Family Medicine. Before I took the plunge into Medical School, I was practicing as a Physician Assistant in villages in rural Alaska for many years. I found my true calling in Primary Care Medicine there. I feel truly blessed to be where I am, doing exactly what I am doing.

As President of the our ACOFP Chapter I would continue to put my heart and best efforts into providing excellent educational, professional and personal growth opportunities for our Chapter.  My goal is to proudly carry the torch that was lit by the inaugural class, nurture the connections that are growing within our communities and program and gently pass it on to the class of 2013 helping them step into their new world and dreams.

Vice Presidential Candidate: David Watts

This letter is to document my intent to run for the position of Vice President for the ACOFP for the year 2009.   I had the pleasure of assisting the current President, Danielle Barnet and the first year representative, Carlanne Defontes in activities at ATSU.  I was the first year Fundraising Chair and Treasurer. It is my intention to continue to be actively involved with the team as I will be the closest officer to aid the next year incoming class to ATSU being that I will be located in Flagstaff, Arizona.  Of utmost importance is that the groundwork and traditions we have enhanced this year, our passed on to the incoming class.  One such example is our blooming relationship with Sunshine Acres children’s home a local nonprofit organization.  Finally it is our goal to continue to provide opportunities for classmates and peers to explore their interests in the different aspects of family medicine.

Secretary Candidate: Andrea Kruz

DO Class of 2011/2012

ACOFP is an organization I have become very attached to.  Over the past few months I have had the honor of being the secretary and community service chairman of the mesa campus.  This has allowed me to become more involved not only in my education, but also with my school and community.  I value the work and service put forth to students and the community by the organization.  Because of this I am running for the upcoming position of ACOFP Secretary.  My recent experience with the organization has exposed me to its procedures and goals and I believe I can do the job well.  During the past few months, I have aided our ACOFP gain more structure on campus, become more involved in service, as well as taking minutes and writing reports/updates.  I have also been a lead teacher working in the front office at a Huntington Learning Center, a representative of my pre-health professions organization during my undergraduate career (ISU), and an ambassador and peer advisor at my undergraduate school.  Each of these positions has given me the experience and understanding I need to be a well organized and efficient secretary for ACOFP.

Treasurer Candidate: Kristyn Wendelschfer

I, Kristyn Wendelschafer, am running for ACOFP SOMA class of 2012 Treasurer.  I feel I am fully qualified and will do a respectable job because Carlann D. has faith in me.  I also enjoy money and the accumulation thereof, so I would like to find ways for ACOFP to get more money and spend it in ways that will benefit the club and its members. 

I have worked directly with money since I was old enough to hold a job.  Working in the restaurant and especially as a bartender (got to get through undergrad somehow) I have been entrusted with the company’s money and making more of it.  It’s what I do.  Thank you for the opportunity to prove myself in this position.
