A House for Hermit Crab
by Eric Carle
A hermit crab who has outgrown an old shell moves into a new one, which he decorates and enhances with the various sea creatures he meets on his travels. At the end of the story he has outgrown his shell again and has to start all over, but is excited about the new possibilities. I like to read this book at the end of the year, because we can compare hermit crab to the kindergarten students moving on to first grade. They come into the class and throughout the year make it their own, but then in the end they have "outgrown" the kindergarten classroom and are ready to move on.
