What's their story?
In writing we are taking a close look at the famous painting American Gothic by Grant Wood. We'll use our imaginations and come up with a story about what we think their problem may be (if they have one) and possibly a solution. Afterwards, we'll take turns modeling for a similiar picture while the class paints/draws their own representation.

| Jump, Frog, Jump!
by Byron Barton
"This is the turtle that slid into the pond and ate the snake that dropped from a branch and swallowed the fish that swam after the frog -- JUMP, FROG, JUMP!" This infectious cumulative tale will soon have the young frogs you know jumping and chanting with joy (says Amazon.com!) Some Illinois Learning Standards addressed:
1.A. Apply word analysis and vocabulary skills to comprehend selections (as we continue to practice quick recognition of high frequency words.) 1.B. Apply reading strategies to improve understanding and fluency (when we engage in independent reading of familiar predictable text.)
3.A.Kb Write words based on how they sound, using initial consonants and ending sounds (as we begin to compose our stories about the American Gothic painting.)
5.A.K Seek Answers to questions through active exploration (as we continue our studies of the life cycles)
12.A.Ka Observe, categorize and describe characteristics, basic needs, and life cycles (as we learn about the life cycle of frogs and toads and compare them to other life cycles we've studied. Also, we are continuing to record our observations of painted lady caterpillars. Hopefully we'll be observing chicks, too!)
Additional St. Mary School Learning Objectives:
