The Patchwork Quilt

by Valerie Flournoy

Tanya's grandmother is making a special quilt with pieces of clothes from the whole family.  But when she gets sick, will Tanya be able to finish the quilt for her?

Some of the Illinois State Learning Standards we will address:
  • 1.A.Kd  Demonstrate phonological awareness (as we list words that rhyme with quilt)
  • 1.B.Kb  Connect text to prior experiences and knowledge (when we associate our scrap of fabric to a memory of our own)
  • 1.C.Ka  Retell information from a story (as we systematically break down the story and summarize together)
  • 2.A.K   Understand the structure of the story (when we illustrate the characters and setting and identify the problem in the story)
  • 3.B  Compose well-organized and coherent writing for specific purposes and audiences (when we write about our own memories associated with the scrap of fabric brought from home)
  • 8.A  Recognize, describe, translate, duplicate, create, and extend patterns in various formats (when we make quilt patterns with geometric shapes)
Additional St. Mary School Learning Standards addressed:
  • Read and understand Sacred Scripture as God's Word speaking to them (when we listen to more Bible stories about Jesus as part of our Lenten studies)
