Kindergarten Challenge
Can you learn all the names and sounds of the letters by the end of the first quarter (Nov. 4) ?
During the first quarter of school the Kindergarten class will be raising the bar for expectations by taking the challenge to see how many names and letters we can learn in this short time.  We will continue to feature a letter a week, but the sooner we learn the names and sounds of the letters, the sooner we'll be sounding words out, learning sight words, writing and READING!

A Letter a Week

The number one indicator of early reading readiness is the ability to produce the names and sounds of the upper and lowercase letters with ease.
(Paraphrased from research by Marilyn Adams)

Although we will be discussing all the letters throughout the year, we will devote one week to explicitly teaching each letter.  As homework, students will be required to create drawings  and cut out magazine pictures of items whose names begins with the letter of the week.  We will practice writing the letter the "kindergarten way", learn a song about each letter and do a variety of activities that will help students make associations so that they can store this information into their longterm memory.

What about socialization?
An important part of kindergarten is helping students to achieve gaining independence.  We can help them do this by teaching them social and organizational skills that will empower them to get what they need even though we are not right by their sides.  Plenty of opportunity will be given to students to interact with one another and learn cooperatively. In addition, First grade will join Kindergarten for Religion instruction and  recess, PE, and lunch will be taken with the other primary classes.

Why does Kindergarten start out with some 11:30 AM and
3:00 PM dismissals?
At St. Mary School we really appreciate parents' understanding this irregular schedule at the beginning of the Kindergarten year.  We have found that those first days can really wear out our Kindergarten students and this is one way of giving them a little break during this transition.  So, while this can be very inconvenient in regards to transportation and child care, we hope it helps give every child a smooth and positive start.

THIS WEBPAGE WILL BE CONTINUALLY UPDATED.  AS SCHOOL BEGINS IT WILL BECOME MORE KID FRIENDLY SO THAT STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO NAVIGATE THEMSELVES.
