intern clinic

the intern clinic program enables students to practice on clients in a protected environment. Intern clinic supervisors are available to assist students in figuring out how to pragmatically apply what they have learned in lecture and practice classes without the additional pressure of having to immediately earn a living by practicing massage.

Additionally, clinic supervisors instruct students how to minimize the risk of injuring clients by using too much pressure and/or using inappropriate techniques. They also help students develop the necessary professional demeanor, ethical sensitivity and compassionate wisdom to prudently:

  • Apply the seemingly conflicting health care theories, principles and practices of Traditional Chinese and Holistic Western medicine. Earn the trust of many different types of people who have paid for manual therapy and who occasionally also request healthcare advice.
  • Decide when to provide comforting, “feel good”, massage and when to provide therapeutic and occasionally uncomfortable manual therapy.
  • Assist clients to feel better and become healthier despite continuing to indulge in behavioral patterns known to cause chronic injury.
  • Assist clients, only if asked, to objectively identify and actively resolve the probable holistic root cause of their complaint.
  • Minimize the risk of suffering emotional, physical and/or financial repetitive stress injuries that commonly afflict full-time therapists.
The intern clinic program provides students with practical experience regarding how to orchestrate shiatsu anma sessions so as to help clients experience and then maintain a more harmonious balance between their body, mind, spirit and environment.
